Wonderfully Done!,
By Nurse Washu (South Burlington, VT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Little Snow Fairy Sugar - Sweet Mischief (Vol. 1) (DVD)
When I first looked at Snow Fairy Sugar, among a zillion other DVD's at an anime con, my initial reaction was like that of Mr. Solomon's - that it would be an overly sweet and sugary kid's show like the name suggests, but I was looking for something for kids anyways, so I bought it. That part I guessed right - it is a good show for kids - but what I wasn't expecting was for the show to be so good! The dramatic/emotional parts are wonderful, and the soundtrack is absolutely beautiful! I loved it more than the kiddies did I think! The character designs are very cute and they remind me a little of Di Gi Charet. The European town that the show takes place in sort of looks like Kiki's Delivery Service too, but I found out later that the setting was actually taken from the town of Rothenberg Germany. A team from Japan went there and shot a great deal of photos and used them for most of the background artwork. An anime show set in an actual foreign location is a rare find indeed! The main characters, Saga and Sugar, are wonderful people. Saga is outgoing, social, and very friendly. Sugar is very cute looking, playful and funny. However there are certain aspects of the main characters, that aren't so cute. Saga is very organized and disciplined for a girl her age, although she doesn't go overboard with PDA's and stuff like that. When Sugar shows up, Saga very much resents Sugar's intrusion into her orderly life. And Sugar, while cute and playful, can be very demanding and persistant at times. Very good, well developed and well rounded characters! ^_^ This DVD is dual language, so even hardcore anime fans can watch it subbed if you like. However doing that, you would miss out on a wonderfully done dubbing production. The voice actresses for Saga and Sugar do a wonderful acting job, very much like I've been accustomed to with Japanese seiyuu. Pioneer continues to impress me with their dubbing production more and more as time goes on.

Great family-friendly anime (and that's a rare thing),

This review is from: A Little Snow Fairy Sugar - Sweet Mischief (Vol. 1) (DVD)
Sugar is a very sweet, family friendly anime targetted at elementary school aged girls and younger, however there's no reason anyone older or male cannot enjoy this sweet fun show about a girl and her innocent 'troubles' and adventures with a group of ultra cute fairies. Charles Solomon described this show well comparing it to Card Captor Sakura (no Saga and Sugar are not tiresome unlike Solomon's reviews) and Strawberry Shortcake. Unlike CCS this show is totally family friendly. It's sweetness will put a smile on your face - the whole series is recommended but do keep in mind who the target audience is. If you want more substance get hold of Perfect Blue or Grave of the Fireflies instead, for me this show is da bomb and if you have a girlfriend/wife or a young daughter this is an item to get for them. ^_^.

I am 12 years old and I still think this was such a cool movie! The characters are VERY loveable, especilly Sugar, the snow fairy. The cute part about the main characters is that they all have big eyes! I liked the parts were Saga was going out and Sugar said ''Let Sugar come too!'' BUY THIS DVD IM TELLIN' YA IT'S JUST SO CUTE!!!

Kawaii!,
By A Customer
This review is from: A Little Snow Fairy Sugar - Sweet Mischief (Vol. 1) (DVD)
This show is cute. The characters are oozing with cuteness so be warned:) but seriously speaking, it was a show made for children thus the kawaii factor is extremely high and violence very low. this however doesn't mean older viewers can't enjoy it. little snow fairy sugar is not only a good anime show for kids, but adults and teenagers will like it as well. the plot is very simple: apprentice fairy trying to find a "twinkle" so that they can become full-fledge season fairies...the only problem is no one has a clue what the "twinkle" is so thus begins the journey and mystery. can't wait to see the rest of the series. the dubbed is not bad but it does fall flat on genki-ness and emotion. i would recommend watching the sub but for children the dub will b fine.

Full of fantasy and humor that is great for the whole family! If you've been looking for something that will make small kids laugh and entertain older kids, this is the perfect show. I'm 15 and I love it and my little brother who's 3 loves it too!

cute,
This review is from: A Little Snow Fairy Sugar - Sweet Mischief (Vol. 1) (DVD)
I have seen this anime around but my impression of it was that it would be one of those vacuous 'cute for the sake of cute' animes about nothing in particular and the most the creator wanted me to take away from it was that 'OMG THAT WAS THE CUTEST EVER WASN'T THAT SO CUTE'. So naturally I stayed away. Despite what I thought initially however, this was actually a good story and yes, it is cute, but not cute for the sake of cuteness.
The story begins with an industrious young girl named Saga. Saga lives with her grandmother and has her life planned down to the minute. She doesn't like disorganization and even makes plans and decisions for her friends. This all starts to unravel, however, when Saga comes across a tiny fairy who almost passes out from hunger. Saga gives her a waffle to eat and the fairy follows her home. At first Saga dislikes the attention and is constantly trying to ignore or get away from Sugar, the fairy. Eventually though, the two become good friends and Saga becomes important to Sugar's mission. Sugar is a snow fairy. Fairies control to weather, there are fairies who control wind, rain, sun, the clouds, etc. and Sugar controls snow, or will after her training period. Sugar is an apprentice fairy and she, along with other apprentice fairies, must spend time on earth to find 'twinkles'. Each fairy must find a 'twinkle' to make their own magic flower bloom, and only then can they become a full fledged season fairy. Many of the episodes focus on the fairies trying to find these twinkles. This show is not only for fairy lovers, there is also a a very strong musical theme. The fairies control their weather specialization with a musical instrument, and Saga herself loves the piano and plays often throughout the series. Music itself doesn't play as big a role as the love of instruments and the hold they may have on our memories. The characters grow immensely in this series. Saga is not the up-tight girl who clung to a schedule. After she meets Sugar, Saga slowly is forced to loosen up a bit. Normally, people can't see season fairies so they fly out in the open and are invisible to people, but Saga is an exception and can see them. This poses a problem for her because not only do her schedules come under attack, but she is talking to and interacting with things no one but her can see. Over time though, Saga makes room for life to happen and doesn't cling so tightly to her schedule. Both Saga and Sugar experience trails, both individually and together and both grow a little bit from each hardship they face. It's kind of like fruits basket in that it's a sweet story on the surface, but it has a hidden depth to it, it's not as deep or intricate as fruits basket but it does have that double layer of surprising substance even though the characters are so cute.

I bought this DVD for my 4 year old daughter and she loves it. The characters are over cute and the dialogue is a bit syrupy but she loves the trouble Sugar causes to Sagas life.
