Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The onset of Christmas reminds Pavel and his wife of their sadness at having no child of their own. When Pavel carves a beautiful girl out of snow and ice, she miraculously comes to life. Try as they may, Pavel and Caterina cannot convince the Snowgirl to come indoors or to eat a hot supper. On Christmas Eve the couple bring the sleeping Snowgirl inside so that Babouschka can bring her gifts. The next morning, the couple's goodness is rewarded, as the Snowgirl has melted and turned into a real little girl. Croll's retelling of this beloved Russian tale is full of the simplicity and charm that make folk stories eternally appealing. The bright illustrations with their doll-like figures celebrate the spirit of the warm country folk who endure the cold Russian winters. Ages 4-8.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lovely Christmas tale, August 14, 2000
By
This review is from: The Little Snowgirl (Paperback)
The Little Snowgirl is a retelling of "The Little Daughter of Snow" from Arthur Ransome's Old Peter's Russian Tales. This is a Christmas tale featuring Babouchka, the old woman of Christmas who parallel's her better known Italian counterpart Befana.

In the tale a woodcarver and his wife have everything they need and want except for a child. After seeing his wife's sadness as the caroling children dream of their gifts from Babouchka, the woodcarver makes a snow girl as a surprise to his wife. The snow girl comes to life, eating crushed ice and sleeping in the cold. Until the miracle of Christmas ...

The illustrations are very well matched in style to the story. This is a delightful book which I recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A happier version of a classic Russian tale., April 21, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Little Snowgirl (Paperback)
In this version of an old Russian fairy tale, a childlesscouple longs for a child of their own. The man builds a little girlout of snow for his wife, and the little snowgirl magically comes to life as they wish. But the snow girl still must eat ice and sleep out in the cold...Nice illustrations add to the cheerful, if predictable, story.
