Book Description

July 22, 1998
Every now and then, you need A Little Something. Maybe your favorite movie is on late-night TV and you want a snack at midnight. Maybe a couple of friends have stopped by unexpectedly to lounge around on your deck. Or maybe you have invited the grandparents and neighbors over to view little Susie's award-winning science project. All of these occasions require serving some good food, and A Little Something: More than 150 Snacks, Hors d'oeuvres, and Appetizers for every craving and occasion

All of the dishes in A Little Something are quick and easy to prepare. The ingredients are easy to find and most can be stored in the freezer or in the pantry to make preparation a snap. Susan believes that you should be able to enjoy your friends' visit. She also provides a menu selection to further help you along, party big or small. There are suggestions for "Poolside Hors d'oeuvres," "Midnight Munchies," "Cocktail Party Tidbits," "Holiday Nibbles," "Super Bowl Snacks," and "The Dessert Bar."

Amazon.com Review

Might as well face the music now: at some time in your life, you will find yourself assembling a Goat Cheese Log with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Basil. Guests are approaching. Time is running low. At some time in your life you are going to need a book like Susan Epstein's A Little Something. You don't want to have to think up stuff like Baked Clam Dip Loaf on your own, do you? Let Susan do it for you, with more than 150 recipes packed into this handy reference. Put this book on the shelf, keep your pantry and freezer stocked, and you can handle anything from an avalanche of hungry teenagers to a ponderously boring book club.

Susan Epstein gets right in, rolls up her sleeves, and produces food you might even want to eat. (When confronted with a wide choice of hors d'oeuvres, how many do you actually try and enjoy?) She doesn't just settle for party nibbles, chips, and dips--she goes right for the throat of late-night hunger spasms with such treats as chopped eggs, mushrooms, and onions on black bread; an open-faced roast beef "sandwich" (it calls for Middle Eastern flat bread); crispy onion rings with a spicy dipping sauce; four versions of nachos; and romaine burritos with blue cheese, chicken, apples, and pecans.

Epstein's theory is that there are many occasions other than parties when a little something is just what the doctor ordered, something just the other side of usual fare. Her book, A Little Something, delivers while leaving snooty pretensions behind on the curb. --Schuyler Ingle

From Library Journal

Here are simple recipes for nibbles and other savories, sweets, and drinks, many of which call for only a handful of ingredients. However, Epstein's "little somethings" are a rather odd mix. Hors d'oeuvres that were popular in the 1950s, like a cheese ball and pigs in a blanket (made with sausages), mingle with Martha Stewart-style recipes like Tricolor Tortellini Skewers; and more contemporary snacks like a Grilled Fontina, Sun-dried Tomato, and Bacon Sandwich appear along with some dated dishes that didn't really need to be reviewed (cocktail meatball cooked in grape jelly for an hour). Not recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource, June 8, 2000
This review is from: A Little Something: More Than 150 Snacks, Appetizers, And Hors D'oeuvres For Every Craving And Occasion (Paperback)
The title of this wonderful little book really captures the essence of what's inside; these simple recipes offer interesting, elegant - and yet uncomplicated - twists on standard dishes, and have proven to be very reliable. This is an excellent resource when you don't have much time to prepare for last-minute entertaining. It's also lots of fun for those of us who like to use freash herbs from the garden! And the book itself is a great gift idea.

2.0 out of 5 stars Common Knowledge, June 17, 2011

This review is from: A Little Something: More Than 150 Snacks, Appetizers, And Hors D'oeuvres For Every Craving And Occasion (Paperback)
All the recipes in this book are sound and practical, but I was quite disappointed to find nothing interesting or original. All the standards are here: basic bruchetta, bagel chips, mini pizzas, caramel corn, fried ravioli and various cookies. If you are completely new to hors d'oeuvres or cooking in general then this might be a fool-proof way to start. Otherwise, you're highly likely to already have or know good recipes for almost everything in here. Definitely flip through a copy at your library or local bookstore before ordering.
