" The Elegants ",
By Roland J.D. Boulware (Hayward , California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Little Star: Best Of Elegants (Audio CD)
The Elegants have that classic "white Doo Wop sound " that seemed to be pretty dominate towards the late fifties & early sixties .The groups' 1958 classic , " Little Star "hit it big , which it did deserve , however , " Please Believe Me " with it's heart felt lead and it's chanting back ground harmonies showed more talent . The Group did well on another APT records recording of the up-beat , "Getting Dizzy " . The bass line opening ,in my opinion ,really makes this song happen . My personal favorites from this CD are " Get Well Soon " & " Still Waiting " , I'm a sap for a good ballad and the group knew how to croon one out . Over all , it's a good CD . I'd buy it again ,but, only if it included more cuts ; 14 sides aren't enough for me . I guess it could be worse , what if these tunes weren't available at all , then we would all be missing out -right ? A great group , from a great time -enjoy . Roland J.D.Boulware

My aunt had a copy of "Little Star" which I played regularly as a child-some years after this great record climbed the charts. Other than the single's flip "Getting Dizzy", I was unfamiliar with the group's other recordings until I stumbled upon this collection.Although the Elegants recorded for several other labels(including United Artists, for which they recorded "Happiness"a great record and worth looking for)their Hull Records output is to my mind their best work. Sad to say the Elegants did not scale the charts again after "Litte Star",apparently for all the standard reasons. That's too bad, because there are several songs on the compilation, notably "Little Boy Blue" that I think should have been hits, but of course were not. It would be unfair to consign the group to "one hit wonder status" because, as this compilation shows, The Best of The Elegants offers even the casual listener a cd full of delights.

This CD is worth every penny I paid for it. "One Hit Wonders" or not, there are some great songs on this CD. If you are a fan of music from the 1950's, this CD is for you. If you like "Group Harmony", this CD is for you. The sound quality is excellent.
