4.0 out of 5 stars My sweet first book, February 21, 2005
This review is from: Little Star (Hardcover)
In his first book of poems, Mark Halliday explored the truth-seeking possibilities of a conversational discursive voice. The voice is anxious, self-doubting, earnest, candid, and rather sweet in its hope that candor can lead to insight. This poetry reflects the influence of Frank O'Hara and Kenneth Koch in its brashness, but also the influence of Frank Bidart in its tensely probing anxiety. I remember being the guy in his thirties who wrote LITTLE STAR. He looks somewhat vulnerable from the perspective of me in my late fifties; he was less protected by irony than I now tend to be.
