5.0 out of 5 stars Superb CD, July 30, 2000

Listen to this CD on a summer night, or driving down a tree-lined country road -- there's a mystical, lyrical beauty you don't find elsewhere. I keep on thinking I play the CD too much and get bored but it doesn't happen. Her melodies are haunting, the lyrics sink in. Unlike so many CDs, there's not a single song on this CD I don't like. Best cuts are Design, Heart of My Head, East by East and Opal Moon. Oddly, the weakest cut is the title cut.

If you like Merrie's first CD (Seasons of Rain) this new CD is a must have. Thought inducing lyrics and a very interesting selection of instruments. The world will be a better place when Merrie is in charge of things. Main stream media take note.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paisley folk-rock, July 9, 2000

There's delicacy to Merrie Amsterburg's voice, with its cascading phrases and little fillips, that makes it perfect for romantic introspection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soothing, Profound, December 17, 2002

Just had to write a review after listening to Merrie's album on repeat while finishing my final exams. I can't tell if it's her profound lyrics, soothing/sensual voice or the sublime catchy-ness of her songs that draw me in but there's no other CD I can put in that will get me working, foot tapping, calm and inspired, all at the same time (perhaps such a confusing sentence is why I love Merrie's deceptive simplicity -- it cuts through the mumbo-jumbo that words turn into so easily). Merrie's impressive both on the surface (first listening) and the deeper you plunge. Fans of early Shawn Colvin (i.e. steady on) or Hope Sandoval's solo release will be pleased. Picture the Cowboy Junkies with slightly more pep. Superb stuff.

This is one cd that gets played over and over and over. The music gets me out of my chair and dancing in my living room. Her words are comforting, inspirational and energizing. Even her "sad" songs contain a kernel of hope. Merrie is one amazing artist and I can't wait for her next cd!

5.0 out of 5 stars Merrie Amsterburg, August 11, 2000
This review is from: Little Steps (Audio CD)
Merrie Amsterburg has produced another haunting, mysterious, vision of musical expression. This mingling of delicate, subtle, sounds and musical arrangements continues down the path Merrie Amsterburg beagan with her first effort, "Season of Rain". The gentle blending provides the listener with an illuminated view of an artist's soul as well as the quiet inspiration to shed that illumination on themselves.

Merrie brings us through the last fifteen years of her life, bringing us to the new milenium with out the "fin de siecle" ennui that has infected so many artists, past and present. "little steps" is a joy and a challenge.
