Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Little League team from Long Beach, Calif., won the World Series in both 1992 and 1993, the first time an American squad had ever done so. Ex-major leaguer Burroughs, who played 16 seasons for six teams in ``The Bigs,'' was the manager and, writing here with Hennessy of the Long Beach Press-Telegram , he has quite a tale to tell. In 1992, his 11- and 12-year-old U.S. champs were absolutely demolished by the Filipino team at the L.L. World Series at Williamsport, Pa. The Filipino players were much older than the kids from Long Beach and apparently not above cheating. But a Philippine journalist blew the whistle and the Zamboanga coach confessed to breaking the rules, so the American team won by default. The next year, however, they beat the Little Leaguers from Panama with no complications, and Burroughs's son was the star. The authors obviously respect the kids as players, but have no illusions about their off-the-field behavior, which makes Dennis the Menace look like a repressed choirboy. This is a rollicking good story.

From Library Journal

In 1992, scandal rocked the world of Little League baseball. The world championship team from the Philippines was stripped of its title for flagrant violations of the rules, and the Long Beach All-Stars became the 1992 championship team by default. In 1993, the team from Long Beach returned to win a second championship. Burroughs coached the team (and is also father to one of the players), while Hennessy covered the story for the Long Beach Press-Telegram. Together, they take the reader inside Little League, Inc. for a coach's-eye view of how the system works. They trace the Long Beach team from the tryouts to the playoffs while telling a lively and entertaining story of kids, coaches, managers, moms, dads, and Little League officials. Recommended for popular culture collections and where there is high interest in Little League.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend it., July 6, 1998
This review is from: The Little Team That Could: The Incredible Often Wacky Story of the Two-Time Little League World... (Hardcover)
The Little Team That Could was pure enjoyment. Jeff Burroughs gives an honest, balanced account of the 1992-1993 Long Beach Little League All-Star teams that reached the pinnacle of success. He describes the thrill of victory and the joy of working with young people. At the same time, he tells about the aggravation of dealing with some Little League parents, officials, and umpires. As a manager in the Little League program for 17 years, I could relate to both the good and the bad. I am so glad I found this book on amazon.com. I wholeheartedly recommend it to any Little League coach, parent, or player.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very fast read, August 29, 2001

For those involved in the national organization of Little League, especially at the all-star level, this is a very entertaining book. Lots of interesting details about the protocol and the accomodations at the regional level and also at Williamsport. Burroughs is very funny describing his escapades as a coach, dealing with all of the classic issues from managing disgruntled parents to dealing with kids who are slightly left-of-center. If you are a Little League addict, I recommend this book!
