5.0 out of 5 stars Little Things We Do Together Is Music For Your Heart & Soul, July 6, 2000

One of those rare moments when your heart is moved to the depths of your soul that is the essence of what it is like to listen to the music Anne Pringle and Mark Burnell create together on their CD The Little Things We Do Together. What makes this Husband & Wife Duo so extraordinary is their authenticity; they live and breathe their music; the source of the songs that you hear comes from the secret center of the marriage of their two hearts. The first time I heard them sing "Heaven Down Here" I swooned at the beautiful harmony of their lyrical voices and was moved to the very core of my being. I was rendered speechless. They are such dynamic performers that anyone who hears them will think they have been magically transported to New York, but fortunately for us Mid-Westerners, it is a short journey to Chicago. I annually fly to Chicago just to hear them perform live! Anne Pringle's vocal style reminds me of a combination of Anita Baker and Judy Garland, the smoothness of R&B with the skillfulness of a veteran Broadway singer. Mark Burnell's piano rivals the legendary piano playing of his mentor Buddy Charles who incidently also joins them on the CD. You will cherish this album; it is not to be missed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Chicago favorites hopefully finally get their due!, April 14, 2000

I have been a fan of Anne Pringle since about 94 and I have to say she is easily the best local artist in Chicago. Mark and Anne's shows are fantastic. I purchased this album from a record store in Chicago on Tuesday and I have not taken it out of my CD player since. Anne Pringle's vocals are lush, polished, sumptuous, smokey and sensual. Mark's voice is the perfect accompaniment and his piano playing is brilliant. I cannot imagine these classics turning out better. The title song is addictive and "Heaven Down Here" shows off their range and intensity. If you are a fan of Linda Ronstadt's albums recorded with Nelson Riddle you will love this! Their sound is as classic as Billie Holiday and as Edgy as Fiona Apple. A must for any fan of husky, musky, jazzy, breezy, vocals blended with humor and heartache. It would be a tragedy if this does not send Anne rocketing into to stardom, FINALLY!

4.0 out of 5 stars What little things do they do together?, February 19, 2003

With tunes like "Two Sleepy People," "The Masochism Tango," "Under the Boardwalk," and "The Tennis Song" you begin to wonder if "The Little Things You Do Together" is an autobiographical glimpse into the personal lives of Chicago jazz musicians Anne Pringle and Mark Burnell or just a really fine CD by the twosome.

As a pianist, Burnell is nothing short of brilliant. But it's his arrangements of the songs on the CD that sparkle. In particular I like how he's woven "42nd Street" with "Puttin' on the Ritz" and "Lounging at the Waldorf". The transitions between the tunes are seamless and clever. The up-tempo arrangement of "Blue Skies" is more consistent with the real theme of the song than other musicians that perform it using the slower, more traditional tempo. Not only do you want to sing, whistle, or snap along with Pringle and Burnell; but as the last cut on the CD it's sure to stay with you the rest of the day in a positive, upbeat kind of way. A great way to end a CD.

Pringle's voice has great flexibility and range. At times she uses it to convey this smoky, sultry quality that makes my heart melt like butter. In "Honeysuckle Rose" she milks that quality for all she can creating moody images of the song's lyrics in my head. Other times her voice is clear, upbeat and uplifting. Her ability to match her vocal characteristics with just the right song is not only dead-on accurate but brings a lot variety and even a few surprises to well-known tunes.

As you can see from the songs already mentioned, the CD has a lot of great music creatively interpreted by Pringle and Burnell. You'll listen to many cuts over and over--you'll listen to this CD again and again.

So does this CD represent an autobiographical glimpse into this husband/wife's personal lives or just a great collection of tunes by the duo? Buy the CD for yourself and decide. Personally, I think it's "Heaven Down Here"--just one more great cut from this great CD.
