5.0 out of 5 stars A Super Starter Sandbox, March 14, 2001

Most of my friends own this sandbox, so I'm very familiar with its advantages and disadvantages. As sandboxes go, Little Tykes are the best because they hold up well through much use and outside weather. The turtle sandbox is a nice starter sandbox for any toddler. It does a good job of keeping the rain out and the domed lid allows room for the toys to stay inside.

I would mention though that they also make a little bit larger and nicer version of this sandbox that is shaped like a dinosaur. The dinosaur version holds twice as much sand and the dinosaur's feet serve as handy little stools for the kids or adults to sit on. The larger version fits three to four toddlers nicely while the turtle only has room for two at most.

When we purchased a sandbox, we chose the dinosaur for those reasons, and I mention this as just something to consider when researching sandboxes. Either one may be the right choice for you depending upon your budget and preferences. Both sandboxes are great--you can't lose either way.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great sandbox for a small area, March 3, 2002

This sandbox is perfect when you only have a very small yard, or balcony or deck for your children to play (or maybe at a grandparents house for those visits).

Only two toddlers fit in it at once if they want room to play but often my children sit on the outside of it and use it for sandplay rather than sitting in it. They seem to enjoy this just as much as if they were sitting in the sand themselves.

The lid is great to keep the sand clean and keep out the neighbourhood cats! I've found only on really windy days will the lid ever flip off. If we know a storm is coming we often just put a brick or something on top to hold it in place until the storm has past.

The lid is easy for my toddlers to remove on their own and has stood the test of time with kids jumping all over and bein out in the weather.

I like these plastic sandboxes as well as you can easily wash them down and if you are moving house you can simply empty it and take it with you.

A great little sandbox for a family that has a small space or is on the move.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Turtle Will Last And Last, November 10, 2000

My sister was given one of these on her second birthday, she is now 12, and it was given to my daughter. The sandboxstll looks new. The plastic has not faded, cracked or warped. It has been left outside for years. The lid fits it perfectly, and no water leaks into the sand. The children can stand on the lid without any problems. Also it is easy to clean, at the end of the summer, we use soft scrub on it and put it in storage until the next year. Your kids will love this!

5.0 out of 5 stars A durable winner!, July 19, 2000

We have owned our Turtle Sandbox for nearly two years and it is still going strong. My 3-year-old and assorted pals have walked all over the top shell, scraped rocks and plastic shovels over the plastic sides and generally mistreated the poor thing, and yet it looks almost new. Not to mention that we have placed it outdoors, all year long, since we first purchased it, and it has not faded.

The kids never seem to tire of building sandcastles or burying "treasures" in the turtle. I think it is a great educational toy. It provides toddlers with a sensory experience as they run fingers and toes through the sand. Bigger kids develop manual dexterity as they shovel and move the sand around. I think it has really taught my son the properties of sand, as he sifts and scoops and experiences with both wet and dry sand.

4.0 out of 5 stars The definitive sand box., May 31, 2000
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars

This is a very durable, useful and fun sand box. The plastic "gives" nicely, but at the same time won't break apart, tear or dent easily. Our 2 year old son walks on the sides of the sand box as well as the top, and both pop back into shape repeatedly.

Surprisingly, although the top is held in place by two loose-fitting "pegs", the top stays put in all but very high winds. The top does a very good job of keeping the sand clean and dry. At the same time, our son can easily remove it and is very close to being able to put it back on correctly, too.

It's a fun toy, a classic in the making.

We played with this toy at a friends house and now we have to have one! I couldn't believe my 10 month old daughter just climbed right in and began digging and playing in the sand. I really didn't think she was ready for a sandbox yet, but she sure had a lot of fun. It kept her entertained at a birthday party for over an hour!

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY DURABLE, March 27, 2003

We got this for my son when he was 2 and he played it in all of the time until he was 4 or 5 and by that time, he began to really get rough with it, but it stood up so well, that it lasted another few years after that!! He would stand on top of it, throw it around, etc. So I just want to tell everyone that not only will it last many years, and you get more than your money's worth, but it will look very good too. It still looked new when he was 5. Now we have one for our daughter.

There are many things about this sandbox that were better than I expected. Since I live in Oregon and it rains alot, I was worried about water leaking into it when left outside. So far in some of the hardest rain fall, it has remained water proof. Also, the lid is easy to remove, put back on and durable enough for 2 little kids to stand on it at the same time. It has been a good purchase.

We have had one of these for years and it is still in great shape. We have built a large sandbox (we have three kids now) and were looking to give it away, but all of our friends had sandboxes. So, we filled it with water on our deck as a wading pool for our two youngest children and they love it. This works great as a sandbox or wading pool.

We inherited this sandbox with our new house (the previous owners didn't need it anymore, so they left it in the garage). It has survived our son, my niece and nephew's visits, and I'm told the previous owners had 3 grandchildren that played with it first. Last summer, since my son was too young for sand, we filled it with water, and used it as a small pool for him to cool off in. It was the perfect depth for him (he was around 9 months old), and the textured surface wasn't as slippery as most wading pools tend to be when wet. I could easily reach him wherever he might scoot to from my blanket next to it on the grass. This year we will try sand. My niece and nephew used it as a sand box before my son was born, and love that it's big enough to sit in, instead of just leaning over, like some sandboxes. We are extremely happy with it, and would definitely buy another if anything ever happened to this one.
