There are better xylopones,

Our daughter has three xylophones (don't asky why) and this one has the poorest sound quality of the three (granted one is a nice wooden xylophone). The sound is very tingy and the notes do not sustain very long after impact. The hammer is very light and bends easily. If you want a cheap xylophone for your child, I would recommend the "2-in-1 Crocodile Keys Musical Instrument" by Fisher Price. We have one of these and our daughter loves it.

A Toy that will be enjoyed for years,

I can honestly say my son has been playing with this toy for 3 years. Many of the toys he got as a baby have been packed away but not this one. I love the fact that the stricker is attached with the string so it won't get lost. A bonus is if you turn it upside down there are ridges which make a great sound when the stricker is rubbed across them. I do wish the string was longer, so it could be played from either side and if it was attached at the end it could be used to pull the toy instead of using the handle. We lost the cards with the songs on them almost right away and I found them hard to use so we never really used them. But this toy was great anyway and I would highly reccommend it.

This is a nice size product for a small child. I bought it for my 18 month old and she really likes it. It is smaller than the other brands but it has more notes than most. The hammer to strike the notes is attached so you dont have to look for it. and it has a handle so it can be carried from room to room which is what my daught does all the time I think itis a good buy

Hideously out of tune!,

My husband and I bought this for our 8 month old who enjoys banging on things to further introduce her to music. She has mostly enjoyed banging on the keys with other objects but does use the striker some as well. We were very upset when we played our first notes on it as it is painfully out of tune. Fine for banging, but buy another brand if you care about music!

OK, you're saying, not another noisy toy for my kids to drive me nuts with, but this one is not as bad as many. First of all, it's not electronic, secondly, it's quieter than a lot of other toys. And besides, my kids have loved it. Every toddler who comes over enjoys playing with it. We lost the hammer a long time ago, but my kids have found other things that work just as well, a honey dipper for instance. Worth the money as we've had it for 5-6 years and it's still going strong.

I think every kid goes through a phase where they want to hit things and make noise. This is the perfect toy. What's better is that the "bat" you tap with is attached and nearly impossible to remove so there's no hunting down a drum stick when it's time to make some music.. errrr.... baby noise! :)

I purchased this for my son at 8 months because he seemed to be fascinated with the xylophone in his music class. He loves to bang on it, with the attached stick as well as with other objects. The tone is good and holds well when the bar is struck in the middle. Plus, it's a whole octave, so you can actually tap out songs. I admit the string holding the stick is a little short, but that's to keep it from being a choking hazard. My son has gotten better at using it as he has gotten older, and he hasn't shown any sign of getting bored with the xylophone. You can't go wrong for the money.

My hubby and I are both musicians, and hope to foster a love of music in our children. With the help of this full octave xylophone (with attached mallet, so it won't get lost!) and other Little Tikes instruments, we hope to do that. There are so many tunes you can play with just these 8 bars; however, I plan to get her the piano--you can imagine how an exited toddler won't always hit the target with a mallet! Don't let that deter you, tho'--if it makes music fun for the child, go for it! And of course, Little Tikes is virtually indestructable!

Even though my daughter's only 7 months when we bought this, I think it's absolutely worthwhile for her. With repeated movements she now knows how to sound the music. Plus this toy keeps her busy for a while as she flips it, turns it, and plays with the striker. She loves the different pitches when she 'taps a tune'.
Great buy!

One minor tweak,

This is a pretty decent toy. One minor tweak is that I had to cut the string holding the stick immediately because it's too hard to play with such a short string. But now she enjoys banging away at it with whatever she can get her hands on at the time.
