Hooked right up to my big tanks.

Any mixed-fuel torch, large or small, can suffer a backfire where the flame burns inside the torch instead of outside the tip orifice.

It does excellent work with the very fine flame that it produces.

I wanted to start working with fairly thin aluminum and knew I needed a smaller torch than my larger Victor style... I'm not all that good working with steel as it has been twenty years since I had a torch (full sized) in my hands, so I didn't know what to expect with aluminum. But I received this outfit as a gift from my wife and an afternoon practicing with this little gem and at least my aluminum "brazing" on 0.030" was becoming a little less hit-or-miss.

Flame, whether oxygenizing of carburizing, is fairly effortless to set even for an out of practice layperson, and the flame can be set soft enough to even braze the thin bottom of soda cans if I'm careful, so I'm really pleased. It's a nice little torch with few surprises, except that when you first get it out of the box it feels like a plaything next to full sized Victor - but it isn't! It's a serious little tool for those delicate jobs.

I gave it two stars because this was bought to replace one just like it. It has always been a jewelry standard.

HOWEVER, this was defective--and dangerous!! I probably just got a bad one and will return it.

After about 10 minutes of use the whole tip started glowing dull cherry red. And, the handle got too hot to hold. The Oxy and acetylene valves were too hot to turn off. A mad grab for the regulators and tank valves shut it down.

A truly "explosive" situation. Back it goes.

(Update on 05 July) This went back to Amazon (they paid the return) and was credited quickly. I ordered another interim and it works just fine!! Just one of those things.

I am adjusting my rating to five stars rom the two I gave initially.

If you are a jeweler, do bench work, or simply need a miniature torch for some reason.... this one is the standard all the others are measured by.

I have use four different kinds of jewelers torches, and own three. The Smith little torch is the only one I have ever really liked, and the only one I really enjoy using. It's a pleasure to use something that works perfectly, exactly as it should, without compromise.

Any mixed-fuel torch, large or small, can suffer a backfire where the flame burns inside the torch instead of outside the tip orifice. The most common reason is getting the tip too close to the work causing the flame to pop and burn back inside. It tends to make a whistling sound when this happens, and everything gets very hot if you don't shut it off instantly.

See http://toolboxtopics.com/Gen%20Industry/Preventing%20Welding%20Flashback.htm and other references to understand about backfires, burnbacks, and flashbacks which can propagate back an cause explosions in the hoses or regulators.

Flashback arrestors installed at the regulator outlet will prevent this last very serious occurrence. They are available for torch inlets as well, but this torch doesn't have standard fittings to accept them. Search Amazon for flashback arrestor to see a variety from different suppliers including Smith.

I had purchased Smith's Versa-Torch. It is an excellent torch, but oversized for working with thin copper sheet metal. I down sized to Smith's Little Torch. It is perfect for my sheet metal projects.

The torch is really easily held in my hand and adjusts pretty well. It's hot enough to cut the metal and then I can adjust it lower for soldering. I make small copper items and have really only used the size 1 tip and would like to find an 0 or 00!! I'm still learning...but find it a great little torch.
