Editorial Reviews

Review

This first installment of The Little Travelers set in Japan is a true pearl in the sea of children s media! It is filled with tender moments between the two sisters, Chantel and Nakia, and their new Japanese friends that demonstrate to viewers, young and old, how cultural understanding can flourish and ideally move us closer to world peace. What an incredible job the film does in sharing the very different customs, foods, and living arrangements. I wanted to live in Japan with the girls! There are moments in the video that I laughed with pure delight when Nakia and Chantel tried to walk in their wooden sandals or fell asleep on the train. There were equally exquisite moments when the sisters played among the blossoming cherry trees or visited the tranquil religious shrines. I can t wait to see where the girls visit next. --Patti Connolly, Educator

4.0 out of 5 stars A peak into a Japanese Child's World, October 9, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We own two of The Little Travelers videos, and this is our favorite (the other is Bali). My children were 1 and 4 when I made the purchase so I am not sure how much they have actually learned by watching the girls' aventures, though they always enjoy the DVD. I like it for it's uniqueness and educational qualities. It is a mellow journey, great for a pre-nap/bed-time movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great family viewing, September 25, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
We ordered this prior to a family trip to Asia (including Japan) with our nearly 3-year old. Weren't sure what we were purchasing, but turned out to be great!!!

The story is entirely filmed from the perspective of the two little American girls who spend three months in Japan. The result is that the story is entirely about their experience as children in another country (not about their parents). They share their observations about living there, ranging from "every day" things that kids would notice (like how the bathrooms are different, how the things in the kitchen are different, new modes of transportation, what the grocery store is like, what kinds of kids activities they can do outside the home with Japanese kids) to the new cultural experiences they have (visiting temples/shrines, dressing in traditional garb, seeing real ninjas, etc.). The story is narrated by the two little girls.

Highly recommend to families who want to expose their young children to more readily-accessible aspects of another culture, or to families who are planning a trip to or longer stay in Japan with young children who have not been exposed to Japanese culture. (This is by no means required, but a nice way to further supplement any other introduction of your trip plans prior to actual travel.) Certain details experienced by the little girls in this film (for example, ceremonial washing of one's hands at a temple) helped us communicate the importance of certain things to our child during our trip, as we had already seen certain things at home.

Not planning to revisit Bali soon (given the distance) but the The Little Travelers Bali preview included on the Japan DVD also looks quite interesting; will most likely order that to keep up the journey mindset.

A Kid's Review
My sister and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this DVD!! We watched it two times in a row when we got it and still watch it all the time!! We want to go to Japan now, too! It is so fun to watch ... we love the beautiful cherry trees and it's funny to watch Nakia try new food! We definitely recommend this DVD to any families who want to enjoy different cultures. We can't wait to see where the Little Travelers go next!
