Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Little Tug is having an identity crisis. The tall ship is taller. The speedboat is faster. The ocean liner is bigger. But when each of his friends is in trouble, Little Tug comes to the rescue (“he pulls, he pushes, and guides the boats to safety”), and each repays his kindness in his or her own unique way. The straightforward story unfolds across the course of a single day, beginning at dawn and ending at dusk. Savage expresses this arc with careful attention to color and hue, sea and sky transforming from dark navys and grays to purples and pinks to a bright blue and back again. The anthropomorphized vessels and crisp, flat backgrounds recall an earlier era of illustration, which adds a vintage charm to the outing. The spiral storytelling and stylized illustration combine for a book that is both a winning read-aloud and a deceptively simple exploration of individuality perfectly suited for its target toddler audience. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Thom Barthelmess

Review

Readers who love ships can expect smooth sailing. (Publishers Weekly)

"...will appeal to boat-loving toddlers. " (Kirkus Reviews)

Petite but powerful, the small red tug feels a sense of accomplishment during the day but still enjoys being pampered at bedtime. Large type, simple sentences, and repetition offer a pleasing story line and showcase the appealing illustrations. (School Library Journal)

My kids (2 and 3 years old) absolutely love this book.

Such a sweet book with a great message. The illustrations are gorgeous and it's hands down my 3 year old's favorite book. Let's just put it this way, I've read it approximately 30 times and we've only had it for about 2 weeks.

I bought this as a gift for my nephews who are 2 and 5 and they love it. It is a cute little book with beautiful illustrations. If your child is into boats it is a great gift. The story line is very simple with only a few words per page. The five year old liked it because he is learning to read and could recognize some of the words. The 2 year old liked it because of the pictures and all the cool boats. It has a great message and is about getting the little tug boat (your kids) to sleep after a hard day's work. Good for any tired parent who wants their kids to go to bed!

By far my son's favorite book. At 10 months he still thinks its the funniest thing, and it's the first thing he grabs out of a stack of favorable books. If only it came in a board book!!! :( he's torn this one to pieces... will probably try the kindle version. Also, wish there we more? My kid just loves this so much.

this book was too simple for my three year old. We are active and frequent readers. This book is probably better for a 18 month old. Cute pictures.

Little Tug was a big hit for my toddler story time crowds. At only one line of text per page, and bold, simple illustrations, this one snagged the attention of all my little transportation fans. It includes boats ranging from a sailboat to an ocean liner, and describes the activities of a tug boat in simple language that even the youngest story listener can understand. The illustrations add a charming personality to our little Tug, and the ending puts a nice cozy cap on this short little tale. This is a natural for bedtime, and a must have for story time leaders wishing to add to their toddler collections. An enthusiastic recommend.

I picked up this book at the recommendation of our librarian, it is beautifully illustrated, clean graphic images perfect for the toddler set and actually quite very pleasant to look at as an adult. There is not too much to deal with on each page. Our daughter loves the book and we easily read it five times a day. She names each of the boats for a member of the family, her dad is the tall ship, her cousin is the speed boat, I'm the cruise ship that gives hugs - and she is Little Tug. We love this book, we highly recommend it and hope this is the first in a series.

Little Tug has many big jobs to do! He may be small but he is strong. He works hard all day and is very tired. His friends join in to make him feel safe. This would be a great choice for a preschool story time on modes of transportation. The illustrations are bright and bold, perfect for sharing with a group!
