4.0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING RECORDING!
Why does a blues musician purchase a classical CD? I suppose in large part it was due to curiousity more than anything else. Jimi Hendrix' "Little Wing", of course, is a true measure of a blues musicians talent. Many try to perform it and fail miserably. 3.0 out of 5 stars good ottmar
Little Wing is not Ottmar Liebert's best work, but it is interesting and inventive. Girl from Ipanema was an interesting take on an old standard from Jazz' dark ages. Paint it Black was wonderful, but Kashmir was very disappointing. I saw in the notes that one of his co-musicians had acquired some exotic Indian instrument and used it on one of the cuts. Why does a blues musician purchase a classical CD? I suppose in large part it was due to curiousity more than anything else. Jimi Hendrix' "Little Wing", of course, is a true measure of a blues musicians talent. Many try to perform it and fail miserably. So, knowing the complexity of the number, I thought I would purchase the CD to see how a non-blues musician approaches the challenge. The answer is: masterfully and refreshingly. Rather than attempt to copy the styles of either Jimi Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughan, Liebert gives a fresh new interpretation of the material. The result is stunning.

On the other hand, the interpretations of the Stones, "Paint it Black", Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir", as well as the other copies are pretty much what would be excepted from a classical guitarist with no surprises and, with the exception of a Saz--a Turkish instrument-- played on "Kashmir", are pretty true to the originals.

While I am not likely to run out and buy Larry Juber does the Beatles or Freddy Fender does Elvis, I must say that overall, this is a nicely done tribute CD and a worthwhile purchase.

Paint it Black was wonderful, but Kashmir was very disappointing. I saw in the notes that one of his co-musicians had acquired some exotic Indian instrument and used it on one of the cuts. They should have used it on Kashmir.

Definitely not Nouveau Flamenco (far and away his best work!) but a worthy addition to any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liebert Just Keeps Getting Better, May 22, 2001

Went out on my lunch hour and bought "Little Wing." I got back to work, put on my headphones, and thought I'd listen to it while I worked. I stopped working during "Little Wing" and gave up trying to work altogether during "The Girl from Ipanema." I just sat there and listened with a goofy smile on my face. This one is yet another totally new and different sounding Ottmar Liebert CD. And, it really, really sounds good.

I picked this up in my flamenco stage two years ago and never got around to listening to it. Saw ottmar live for the 1st time several weeks ago and wanted to go back and listen to all his stuff I own.I have read the other reviews and they seems to be fair. My take, he puts a flamenco twist on some notable tunes which are interesting. Ultimately, I got tired of listening to it and moved on. Some of it just sounded so much of the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liebert 's "Little Wing" triumphs, January 15, 2002

Flamenco guitarist Ottmar Liebert scores another hit with his latest release "Little Wing".
Liebert mixes his many styles of Flamenco, Rhumba and Latin Grooves and adds them to such rock classics as Jimi Hendix's "Little Wing", The Rolling Stone's "Paint It Black" and Led Zepplin's (yes, Led Zepplin) "Kashmir". Not surprisingly, Liebert pulls it off. It gives the songs another musical style and dimension. It also shows off the guitar virtuoso's picking talent along with his outstanding band, Luna Negra.
If you're looking for a smooth sounding, enjoyable album, this is it. It's a great album. Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album to have!, September 1, 2003

This is one of the best Ottmar Liebert's works, in my opinion. After The Hours Between the Night and Day, Little Wing is the album to give to someone you would like to 'innitiate' in Ottmar Liebert and Luna Negra's musical experience. Friends who have never heard of him and listened to this album, loved it since the very first time.

Enjoy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ottmar is just great!, February 20, 2002
This review is from: Little Wing (Audio CD)
Just when I thought he was in a Nuevo Flamenco rut he surprises me with some guitar playing that is very nice. I am learning how to play classical guitar, and just love to listen to someone like Ottmar who is so flawless. I especially like the rock covers, since I grew up listening to all of them too. But he throws in more "Ottmar type" stuff, to make this a well balanced album. A friend of mine tells me that sometimes he just shows up, playing in coffee shops in Santa Fe, where he lives, so if you're in the area you might see him.
