My daughter (just turned 5) has just been recently getting into longer books. She's not yet in kindergarten, and not reading, but I read to her every night. She's into fairies, princesses, unicorns, the usual girl stuff. She really, really enjoyed this book! There were some funny lines in it (Willa says "nope, nope nopity, nope" which my daughter says all the time. I thought this would be a good book to prep her for kindergarten. Not sure, but I think it may have made her a little more nervous (there was a "mean girl" in Willa's class) and the main character (Willa) tells a few lies and steals a little bit... but my daughter and I indeed enjoyed reading it together. I figure that the flaws of those in the book exist in real life and make for a good conversation starter for us.

I'll be buying the rest of the series for her for Christmas.

My daughter and I read alot togehter. Some books that she loves I actually just barely make it through. This was a pleasure to read for both of us! I think 1st grade and up would be appropriate for this book and its content.
The words are easy enough for 3rd grade readers to read alone or advanced readers at a younger age. My only word of caution is that the book does use the phrase "freak out". I realize this is very common these days but it made me pause to see it in print in a child's book. I will be getting the rest of the books for my daughter because the overall book and story line were wonderful. Even though it dealt with "cupid" issues of flying, etc. children can relate to it because they all have had something that didn't come easy for them.

I received a photo this week of my granddaughter now 8 reading this little book while covered up in the bed, she elected to read this book instead of playing video games! So proud! It is a fun little book, easy reading for an 7/8 yr old.

A cute story and a wonderful first of a series. I love that Willa Bean has flaws, is different from others and yet loves that she is different, has great friends and treasures her friend and family as much as she enjoys finding treasures. The story follows Willa Bean as she dreadfully prepares for her first day of school where she will have to - fly. And she cannot - she does not want to reveal this to others (her best friend and her family know but does the whole school have to?)
The author does a good job of capturing the joys of a little girl finding pleasures in the smallest of treasures, like a shiny stone on the road; her relationship with her friend, her pet, and her family is sweetly captured; and her fears as well as how she works to overcome them.
I am looking forward to reading the next in the series as are both my kids. I read this book to my almost six-year old daughter over a few days and my son, who is nine, could not resist coming up and hearing what was up with Willa Bean each day (from one chapter per day to three chapters per day towards the end was what they wanted!)
