Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6?An interesting addition to the plethora of craft and activity books based on children's literature. This compilation provides a glimpse into the Victorian era, when pleasures were simple, families were close-knit, and homemade fun was a way of life. The chapters evolve from quotes from Little Women and present charming party ideas with recipes, easy projects, and gifts, all using readily available, inexpensive materials. One chapter includes a selection of Victorian parlor games, such as Rigmarole, charades, and Truth. Directions are clear, though brief. When adult assistance is needed for safety, it is clearly noted. Colorful watercolor paintings enhance the text. Young and old Little Women enthusiasts will find this a treasure trove of ideas. Unfortuntely, there is no index of activities. The "American Girl Pastimes" series (Pleasant) is similar in its period coverage of crafts and cookery, but divides the topics into separate volumes.?Beth Irish, Orange Public Library, CA

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful book, bursting with ideas, June 23, 2000

This review is from: Little Women Book: Games, Recipes, Crafts, and Other Homemade Pleasures (Hardcover)
As a tremendous fan of Louisa May Alcott's works, especially Little Women, I enjoy reading anything related to the novel. Ms. Penner's book contains ideas on crafts, hairstyles, edible treats, games, celebrations, and more, all corresponding to the March sisters' experiences. Although aimed at girls in the 8-12 age range, the book will appeal to anyone young at heart. It is charmingly accented throughout with watercolor illustrations. This book would make a wonderful gift for any girl who loves Little Women and desires to live as the March sisters did.
