Book Description

8 and upRadio Theatre
Louisa May Alcott's Little Women is a timeless American classic. Marmee has her hands full. Father's away in the Civil War and their daughters are growing up so fast. Meg is tenderhearted and romantic. Boisterous Jo—the tomboy—is always getting into adventures. Shy little Beth is the stay-at-home sister, and golden-haired Amy longs to be a famous artist. Four very different “little women” who love each other dearly. Like all sisters, they sometimes disagree. Still, when trouble comes to the March family, they face it bravely together.
From the award winning team that brought you The Chronicles of Narnia, these classic stories feature performances by a full cast of actors, including Gemma Jones from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and many others. Motion-picture quality sound design.

My husband and I are avid readers. We have read many classics to our children (aged 5 mo; 2 yrs; 3 yrs; 6 yrs). I know what some of you may be thinking... they don't/can't understand what is happening in the book or won't sit still quietly long enough for anyone else to hear the story. That is somewhat true however, you may be surprised to know how much they do glean from the story and as they become involved in the story will sit quietly (perhaps not so still, though.. ha, ha), but mostly they just want to hear your voice and be with you doing an activity together. We don't read very much at one time, just enough to keep them interested in the book. They love it. That said, we also live four hours one-way away from any of our relatives so spend a fair amount of time in our van. We put in one of the story CD's and everyone is mesmerized. We are all doing the same activity, all talking about or asking questions about the same activity as well as giving our children a "step inside a book" sense.

These dramatized books stay fairly true to the books (unlike a movie version) and keep imagination soaring... everyone gets to imagine the same scene in their own way. We also listen to these for 10 minutes or so after our nightly ritual just before bed. If your CD player (iPod, etc) has a "sleep" setting, it works lovely to send them off to dreamland with a wholesome and wonderful storyline.

This series is quite well done and the characters do not seem like they are "reading" their part. It is more like listening to a play as not only the characters are spectacular, but the background music and noises are perfectly timed. We have many books on CD by this production company and none of them disappoint!

Great in the car for short errands or long trips. The kids and I could hardly wait to get back in the car to hear what would happen next. Wonderful casting!
