More About the Author

Louisa May Alcott was both an abolitionist and a feminist. She is best known for Little Women (1868), a semi-autobiographical account of her childhood years with her sisters in Concord, Massachusetts. Alcott, unlike Jo, never married: "... because I have fallen in love with so many pretty girls and never once the least bit with any man." She was an advocate of women's suffrage and was the first woman to register to vote in Concord, Massachusetts.

The stars are for the content: nice, rather preachy little stories. If you liked "Little Women," you will like the other stories well enough. But I take great umbrage at the claim above, that the books that are transcribed for the Kindle by this particular company are "hand-edited and checked for spelling and punctuation errors." It must have been checked by someone who has never been inside an English classroom in his/her life! I can excuse an error here or there, but at times whole words are missing, and I lose the whole context of a sentence as a result. It's frankly appalling...and I wouldn't be so offended by it if they hadn't made this incredibly false claim. It's such an insult to an acclaimed author. If they'd like to employ me to do their proofreading, I'd certainly be willing! But again, the stories are sweet and wholesome (too much so, one might say).
Added note: As I continued to read, I discovered an ENTIRE PAGE was missing. That's just awful. Hope I didn't miss anything important...

I had recently reread my childhood hardback of Little Women due to our son acting in a college rendition of the Broadway musical. Afterwards, I couldn't remember what had happened to the characters in the sequels, so I purchased the series for my Kindle. At times the reading got a bit slow, but I was glad I persisted. I have felt very close to Alcott's March family for years, and it was rewarding to see what became of them over the years. The sequels aren't nearly as good as Little Women, but if you're a big fan of the original, you may be curious enough to stick with them till the end.

"Little Women" was just the first book in a series of four books about the March family. The subsequent books go on to tell the stories of the characters as they travel through the years of their lives. It was so rewarding to share in their happiness and heart-breaks. These susequent books showed how their unfailing belief in God helped them get through some of the most difficult challenges they faced. It also showed how they never forgot to show their gratitude for all their blessings. Their faith was unwavering. These books were a great inspiration to me. I hope they will be for you also.

... that the "Little Women" quartet of novels should be my first-ever kindle download, especially when my second was Vladimir Nabokov's "Ada". I'll explain why, eventually. The first book of the series, Little Women, is what was called a "children's classic" when I was a little boy; therefore I avoided it like the plague. Eventually I read some of the turgid prose of Louisa May's father, Bronson Alcott, a man whose life was far more interesting than his philosophy. And so, here I am, at age seventy, reading a novel of naive simplicity and sentimentality, and finding it enormously charming.

This kindle edition downloaded so close to instantaneously that I was tempted to run amok and download the entirety of 19th C literature just for the thrill of 21st C cyber-might. It's odd, then, to discover that the edition must have been scanned by hand from an old paper copy, since there are faintly visible underlinings and marginalia. Nothing yet has interfered with my reading comprehension. I've read only the first and most famous of the quartet so far, but I imagine I'll plow on through the rest. It isn't great or profound writing by any means, but it's oddly soothing.

The impetus to read Little Women came to me from watching/hearing the contemporary opera "Little Women" by composer Mark Adamo, on DVD. I've reviewed the DVD. Adamo's libretto extends the story past the first volume of Alcott's tetralogy; in fact, scenes from the childhood of the four sisters occur in the opera only as flashbacks. And Adamo's opera is far from a portrayal of idealized innocence. It's a musically and dramatically potent portrayal of 'separation', of growing up while trying not to grow apart. I recommend it.

I have loved these books since I was a small child. My mother gave me my first copy of Little Women and the rest is history. I highly recommend these books to any child.

I read most of the books during my pre-teen, early teen years. I was one of four daughters, and could see a little of all of the March girls in each of us. They were favorites of my mother and my grandmothers and gave us much to share. I couldn't wait to have the same conversations with my own children.

Though these stories are classics and have been printed thousands of times, this particular version was so filled with typos that it was unreadable. These typos included jumbles of letters and symbols with no discernible meaning, and sentences that had so many errors that they made no sense. I sent this book as a gift, having it delivered directly to the recipient, and I am embarrassed by the quality.

I kept putting off reading these books for various reasons; among them a fear of being bored by stories too old to be relevant and afraid I knew too much of what happens for it to have an emotional impact. As to the first, while some of the references may have been a tad dated, I was never, ever bored and for the second, let's just say tissues were required.

I'm glad I waited past childhood and teen years to read these books. I don't think I would have appreciated them nearly as much at a younger age.
