From Publishers Weekly

Cannon (Stellaluna) returns to the land of the Fuzzheads for this tale with an ecological message. Little Yau longs to become sufficiently accomplished at mixing plants into healing medicines that the Wise Ones, the eldest Fuzzheads, will invite her to the mountains to teach her "the great secrets." After bungling her exam in the medicine cave, Yau goes in search of her best friend, Trupp, who encountered the human world in the inaugural volume about the Fuzzheads and has been away a long time. She finds him unconscious, and summons the Wise Ones. Cannon paints the triumvirate perched on the "Great Arch," a terra cotta stone that arcs against a mystical blue sky, overlooking the mountains. The arid landscape calls to mind breathtaking vistas such as the Grand Canyon or Sedona, a worthy perch for these spiritual leaders. The Wise Ones help her determine that he has fallen ill to "poison from the human garden." Only the thumbfoot leaf will cure the ailing young patient, but when Yau (camouflaged in human garb) goes to retrieve the plant, she discovers human developments in place of the thumbfoot's usual habitat. These paintings pale when compared to the Fuzzheads' homeland, and the message here tends to overshadow the story. But Trupp's fans will likely enjoy seeing his further adventures through the eyes of his best buddy. Ages 5-8.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastical animals live among us, April 10, 2004
This review is from: Little Yau: A Fuzzhead Tale (Hardcover)
Trau has been teaching Little Yau the ways of healing. Little Yau is hoping that soon the Wise Ones will take her up into the mountains to continue her education. Her healing skills are put to the test when her friend Trup falls ill. The Wise Ones reveal that Trup has been poisoned (by weed killer sprayed in a human's garden), and the only cure is the thumbfoot leaf. The white furred cat-like Fuzzheads creatively face the dilemma of living in close proximity to humans. When the Wise Ones and Little Yau need to search the nearby human town for the rare thumbfoot plant, they don human clothes to disguise themselves.

The story is complemented by beautifully bright full-color illustrations. The smaller black and white sketches beside the text add details such as how Trup was poisoned and what Trau does to care for Trup while the others search for the thumbfoot leaf. Some of the illustrations are quite comical. Sure to generate giggles is the two-page spread of Little Yau attempting to run on two feet like a human, then giving up the pretense in favor of speed. Similarly delightful is the "Human Phrase Book" the Fuzzheads have studied in order to have (limited) conversations with humans.

Charming story that opens many opportunities for discussion about the natural world. The fuzzheads are mythical creatures that provide life lessons in a gentle manner. Loveing support from family members, teamwork, strategies for finding the needed plant -- all terrific conversation starters. My 6 year old granddaughter enjoyed reading the book to me (about 1/3 of the words). I filled in the gaps, and explained concepts. Wish there was a fuzzhead hand puppet to accompany the stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous pictures and little else, September 24, 2008
This review is from: Little Yau: A Fuzzhead Tale (Hardcover)
I hate to be the horrible person that seeks cruelty toward children's books, but something about this too-cutesy story just rubbed me the wrong way. Cannon's animal sweetness is fine in her other stories, but this seemed a desperate attempt to connect with a slightly older audience that loves all the animal fantasy novels.

Frankly, it comes off as very, very weird.

We have the Fuzzheads, furry creatures living practically invisible to the modern human world. They are all mystical and connected with nature. When her friend is poisoned by humans, Little Yau must show her courage to save him.

A simple plot--and way too wordy for it. My class became restless as I could not for the life of me figure out what was the age target.

I suppose it's thought-out in its way, but it seems too uncomfortable in its length.

At least we get all the lovely pictures.
