I just finished reading this incredible fictional history. A book rich in famous names and researched facts from the 1830's. The plot has enough history and suspense to keep it interesting. Its a must have for any school age child and maybe an adult one too!

Littsie of Cincinnati is on my fourth and fifth graders' favorite books list. It offers a great family story, vivid characters, a young girl's very big adventure, and a historical view of Cincinnati in the 1830's. My students love the story so much that they're hoping it will be made into a movie. I recommend the book to children 8-12 and to all adults, especially teachers of Ohio history. It's a memorable adventure!

Littsie of Cincinnati is a super book for middle school children. They can easily relate to the characters, and since all kids like to have adventures without their parents, they especially love Littsie. It is historically acurate and a fun read. A nice way to introduce children to history. I did not have to coax my class to finish it!

My son (4th grade) is currently reading this book for school. The narrative structure is Littsie as a grandmother, telling her grandchildren what happened when she was a child. The events that are in the story are very much within the scope of history. That's not the problem. The problem is the narrative itself doesn't stay a "story in a story" (also known as a "frame story"). Tonight, as yet another dialog took place when young Littsie was in another area, and couldn't possibly have known about it to tell her grandchildren about it, I was wondering whether to bring it up this faulty narrative structure to my son's teacher or not, or to just talk to him about it. I didn't want to be negative about something they are working on in class. Suddenly my son said "How does she know all of this?!" I congratulated him on being a close reader, and then asked him to think about better ways for the author to have dealt with these transgressions (for example, simply having grandma come out of the "storytelling mode" to tell the grandchildren that one character or another talked with her and told her what was said would have helped, but there are characters *doing* things, too -- things that Littsie would have never seen to tell her grandchildren about it).

I think this book has a lot of good things to offer (and we live in Cincinnati, so that is one reason it is being used in class). I did tell my son that the historical information was why it was published, but really, the editor/s should have done a better job of keeping the narrative structure intact, especially if it's going to be used in classrooms.

Our district chose this book as a read aloud for our 3rd grade students. It spurred a great interest in Cincinnati history. We then read the 2nd book as a novel study. I was blown away by the high level of concentration my students had. I would recommend this book to anyone! In fact, I have!!
