A friend of mine who had also gone through loss recommended this to me when I experienced my miscarriage a few years ago. At the time it was available free online and I found it really spoke to me in a way that most other writings didn't. It addressed my very real pain at the loss of my child without being cliche or sappy and it acknowledged my loss without diminishing it which was important because in so many ways miscarriages are so often treated as an illness of the mother rather than the death of a baby. There are often no funerals, no body to view or hold if the loss is early, people say things like that it was for the best, that you can always try again, and that now there is one more angel in heaven, and really all you want is for your baby to still be with you and healthy. Besides addressing my pain it gave me a way to pray when I had no words. It was exactly what I needed and I have since shared it with other women I know who have had to go through a loss. No, it isn't really for women with healthy pregnancies nearly as much as it is for those going through this hardest of losses, but it is such an amazing and much needed resource for those in the church who are either going through loss themselves or who work with families going through a loss. I highly recommend it. Also wanted to note that I do not come from the Episcopal church but that made absolutely no difference.

Has great prayers for those wanting a child, pregnant,in birth, fears, good news and bad. Also, has a few prayers for the loss of child during pregnancy and for an abortion. The latter prayer changed my perspective. A must have for any follower of Christ especially those of the Episcopal faith.

I have used this resource with several families who have had miscarriages or other problems with fertility and childbirth. They and I have been favorably impressed. The chosen scriptures express pain and lament particularly well. My congregation also holds "blessing ways" for pregnant women nearing their due date but I did not find the section for this situation helpful.

I purchased this item in anticipation of the birth of my nephew. However, it focused solely on sad occasions: miscarriage, abortion, death of a child. While I know these are occasions which must be solemnized, it was horrifying to see this book before the birth of a child. It should be re-named so that it is identified as a ritual about LOSS, and does not encompass the entire birth process. It is a valuable resource for those who are mourning, but not appropriate for those who are rejoicing.
