This movie is all about Guilin, Guang xi Folk Song... It was orginally shot in 50's or 60's, really long long time ago. That's why this DVD the picture quality is okay, which hence the 4 stars. And the color is added later on. The original movie is black and white...
I have been to Guilin, this movie reminds me of Li RIver, Yang Shuo, all beaufitufl landscapes .. and beautiful Guang Xi folk song...

This is one of my favorite Chinese movies. The Guangxi Province scenery is spectacular, and the folk songs are a real treat to hear. The movie does reflect the time it was made. It pits the heroine and the villagers against the evil landlord. But it is also unusual for the time in that the heroine and villagers are not dressed as Communist Party members and in that there are no Chinese national flags to be seen. I might add that the real translation of Liu San Jie means Liu's Third Daughter, not Sister.

If you want to see something different, without lots of action and explosions and noise, buy this movie. I am certain it will entertain you for many years.

The synopsis is totally wrong. It is not about martial arts at all but about folk songs and common folk versus the evil rich man. Liu San Jie is the best! The scenery is beautiful and the song contest about halfway through is priceless!

In order to enjoy this movie, you must have an interest in Chinese opera or old Chinese movies. Most young folks would care less for this movie, but for older folks (particularly if you are from China) who have a passion for old China would enjoy the singing and heroics of this movie. This movie is a musical, so expect Chinese operatic singing, which means slow moving story. Much like comic books, this story is about the rich vs. the poor, the haves vs. the have-nots, the bad vs. the good, the few vs. the masses, and the villains vs. the heroes. Some will compare it to Capitalism vs. Communism. However you look at it, this is a simple story about the fight between those who are privileged and abusing their powers, versus, those who are struggling in life and work their butts off. The costumes and sceneries are nice as they reflect old China.

It was good movie, but the evil rich man got defeated the contest by Liu San Jie. Because the evil rich man want everything what he want, but he can't do anything he wants. Liu San Jie had fell in love the fisherman's son Ah Niu, later Liu San Jie got escaped by the evil rich man because Ah Niu tried to save Liu San Jie to get out the evil rich man's house. Liu San Jie and Ah Niu made a promise that whoever dies an 97 years and wait for 3 years, then they traveled.

It is an interesting adaptation of a Guandong opera of the same name - based on old folk tales. Especially as it manifestly bears Communist style sentiments throughout the movie. It gives an insight to the crossover between art forms and political thought in China.
