5.0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor...See these guys live...
Just saw these guys for the second time. They put on the best show I have ever seen. Their shows are so alive..and there songs are so original and well written. All three of them are the nicest guys you will ever meet, and their music surpasses everything ive ever heard. The brothers both play drums at the same time as they play thier guitars(or banjo). 1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Karaoke
It's like paying $15 to listen to karaoke in a bar full of drunks. The picking is good (just like karaoke) but the Avetts insist on opening their mouths and trying to sing (just like drunks at a karaoke bar). One of the brothers even screws his voice up on purpose just to make the bad worse.

If you are in to this stuff, I would recommend that you spend...

They both have a kick pedal for a drum and a high hat so they have percussion, bass, banjo, and guitar. But dont think these guys are your regular bluegrass band, because they are nothing like that at all. Take blugrass, Rock, folk, punk, and a ton of emotion...put it together, and you still MIGHT come close to getting the sound that these guys create. Do yourself a favor, buy this album and SEE THEM LIVE.

4.0 out of 5 stars FUN that grows on you . . ., June 1, 2007

This was the first Avett Brothers CD that I heard. I have never seen them live (although I will - in 2 weeks! can't wait!) I admit, there are times on this recording when they are pretty out of tune, and they are more yelling instead of singing. And the sound quality of the last couple songs is pretty bad. BUT, the sheer joy of playing for their fans came across so powerfully, and their raw energy just burst out of my speakers - and I was totally struck down with Avett Brothers fever. I have played this one ALOT. It's not for everyone, but if you want to take a chance on a "punk band with banjoes" give it a listen.

The Avett Brothers put on one of the best live shows I have ever seen. Don't let your jealousy get the best of you, buddy.

I own most of the Avett Brothers' CDs but I especially love this one. This was made back when they were doing rip-snortin', screaming and stomping live performances. They've moderated that in more recent years and they're still better than anybody else out there, but I really preferred them back then. Some of the best love songs I've ever heard are on this CD - Smoke in Our Lights, November Blue and Offering just give me goose bumps. They really know how to tell a woman she's loved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album, September 2, 2009

For the most part, this album epitomizes the energy and raw power of an Avett Brothers concert. The mix of high energy songs ("Walking for You," "A lot of Movin'," "A Gift for Melody Anne") and soothing ballads & love songs (a tremendous version of "November Blue," "Offering")is perfect. Furthermore, the audio mix also captures the essence of a standard TAB audience without overpowering the vocal tracks; a task that was undoubtedly difficult to accomplish.

Overall, a great album for long-time Avett fans and Avett newbies alike. It stays in heavy rotation around our house.

My son turned me on to the Avetts when he was home on leave this Christmas. Took a few listens, but now I play them all the time and sing along in the car and in my office at home. The melodies and harmonies are outstanding, but I suggest listening to the studio recordings first to get a sense of the music as written before delving into the freewheeling live sessions. Both are good, but the former is more accessible to the first-timer than the latter. And it's not just for kids!

This album is a terrific way to get a taste of a high energy live Avett Brothers performance (the best way to enjoy them). These guys put together rock, bluegrass, balads and punk - delightful.

This is my favorite Avett Brothers record. They are a wonderfully energetic live act, and this is the perfect gift for any youthful, open-minded bluegrass fan.

Great tracks 1 through 9 but the remainder of the cd is less than stellar. The sound quality goes to hell as if someone recorded the tracks with a cell phone

It doesn't get any better than TAB Live, trust me. If you've never seen them perform, you're missing out. Make it happen.
