Editorial Reviews

Before the advent of the Japanese school of Progressive rock music during the Eighties, represented by GERARD, OUTER LIMITS or PAGEANT, a certain number of local bands of great interest were already active. Amongst them, the name of SHINGETSU was on the top of the list. Led by the majestic voice of the charismatic singer Makoto KITAYAMA, its music was filled with a level of sophistication and virtuosity not so common at this time, as well as great Mellotron parts. Let's also notice an unique sense of theatrality, at the crossroads between traditional Japanese influences and scenical innovations ala GENESIS. Published as a joint-venture between Musea and Poseidon Records, ""Live 25-26 July 1979, ABC Kaikan Hall Tokyo"" allows the listener to discover the group on stage, a month after the release of its first eponymous album. A certified authentic document ! ""The Whole Story of... - 1976-1982"" is composed of five CDs and one short DVD, the whole thing being available as a splendid box in a book format. There included are the first eponymous album, the second one ""From A Distant Star"" that was re-recorded in 2005, the 1979-1980 out-takes, archives of parallel outfits HAL and SERENADE, plus one fifth disc including various unreleased sessions. As for the DVD, two period promotion clips, as well as recent rehearsals are featured. The whole thing is naturally completed with a booklet that is richly documented and illustrated. To be discovered ! Apart from the self-titled album recorded in 1979, SHINGETSU has published lots of unreleased tracks, with the same charm and refinement. Recommended !

Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
It seems like my prog purchases have been coming from all over the planet lately.
This is my first exposure to the band Shingetsu, and it's a very pleasant surprise indeed.
Their music is clearly in the style of mid-70's Genesis, but very unique and interesting in its own right. Since their studio cd's are hard to find, this live cd is not only fairly affordable, but sort of a nice "best of" to boot.

Sound quality? Not great. But not terrible. And these songs are generally fantastic, so you may tend to overlook the shortfalls on crisp sound engineering. The lead singer has often been compared to Peter Gabriel, but I suspect that it's for his stage antics more than his voice - he's got a great voice, but PG it ain't. Typical of other Nippon bands, the musicians are all very accomplished, and really cook on some of these songs.

This just missed my 4-star rating grade, but there's some great and different shtuff here for the curious and hungry prog lover. Another worthy find for sure; expand thy horizons.

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 7.6/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 7/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 8.1 ("3.5 stars")
