Book Description

Hugh Nance used to think his wife whined too much—his three kids were spoiled brats that took everything for granted. Hugh is ten years old.

When an embittered, unremarkable forty-seven-year old man’s life is cut short on an icy highway, he receives the opportunity to try again. Hugh is taken back to 1974—back into the body of his boyhood—with all the memories of his middle-aged life in tow. Three and a half decades must be relived if he is to see his family again. The years have to be repeated carefully, or he may never be reunited with his future wife at all.

The memory of his first family fades as this second life proceeds; old habits kick in, and Hugh scrambles near the end to set things right.

Warning: This 'coming of middle-age' story contains graphic scenes and strong language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Faults, perhaps. Worthy, yes. March 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I will be completely honest... I almost stopped reading half way through the first chapter. Geoff North's literary style may be described as "stoccado" with rapid, thrusting simple sentences occasionally fleshed out with more complex paragraphs, and combined with what is initially a crude, unsympathetic character and seemingly gratuitous use of expletives, I was nearly dissuaded to even continue. The subject, however, continued to pull me; reliving childhood with memories intact is a very human source of fascination and daydreams.

There were a few lurching momentum moments: supernatural mystery to almost Tom Sawyer-esque boy adventure to haunted house horror montage to supernatural mystery again, all interspersed with brief philosophical ruminations on the nature of time. North shone at his best during the "boys' adventure" segments, drawing the 70s environs and youthful interactions with clarity and deep connection. The final climax of Hugh going forward to meet his penultimate destiny was also especially poingant.

When I finished, I had a pleasant lingering savor of both the ending and subject. I may not have particularly enjoyed the presentation, but neither did the manner that North chose to tell his story hinder it. And in the end, if a book can get us to think, reconsider, even perhaps to dream about our lives well after the final page has passed, it is worthy enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! June 1, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The premise of this story is deceptively simple. What if you'd made a bit of a hash of it the first time around and someone gave you the chance to live most of your life again - AND you'd be able to remember all the mistakes you made?

This is what happens to the book's main character, Hugh. Now, if it happened to you, you'd have a perfect life wouldn't you? You'd be so much wiser.

Actually no, you'd probably go off and commit a whole set of new mistakes and that is precisely what Hugh does - sometimes to devastating effect.

I loved this book. I really cared what happened next and Hugh was flawed but likeable as the main character so that resonated well too. I don't know Geoff's work but I'll be looking out for it in the future. This is the kind of book I will almost certainly read again - and I don't do that very often these days!

5.0 out of 5 stars Live it Again April 18, 2014

The idea of going back and reliving your life is intriguing. The changes you could make in your life don't always turn out the way you expect. I really enjoyed this book. It's different and seeing the hero struggle to get everything right was engrossing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cool book!! March 27, 2014

This was really interesting and thought provoking...what would YOU do if you could go back and live your live over again, knowing what you do now? It held my interest all the way through; the ending was sort of dumb, but it really doesn't matter--the journey is what is important, right? LOVED IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is excellent! April 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
You know when you reach the end of a long book, a really good long book, and you sit back and sigh contentedly?

That's where I am right now. I just finished Live It Again five minutes ago, and I've spent those minutes remembering my favourite moments from the story. I'm not going to spoil it for you. There's a good enough description further up this page that tells you all you need to know about the story structure. But the most important thing is, Geoff North has told this story superbly. He grabs you and holds on all the way through, and leaves you with a warm glow at the end.

This is an excellent book!

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Live it Again! May 23, 2014

I am guilty of buying the free books, but I read what used to be the back cover before I waste space on my Kindle. This book was well written! On top of being well written, it is one of the few books that even weeks after finishing the book, it is still fueling my imagination. I wish I could Live it Again! I wasn't thrilled with the ending, but it may just be that I'm a bit selfish and wanted the author to write a much longer book.

If you're looking for an imaginative, compelling read then I can't recommend Live it Again enough. The main character is not the vibrant charismatic personality who usually populates great novels - he's full of bad habits and not terribly likeable. But when he "snuffs it" he gets the chance to try it all again and so we go back with him and, as the story progresses, we begin to feel for him, to understand what makes up his very fabric and it's possible to truly identify with him.
A book that makes the reader sit up and think, to realise that all is not as it seems and neither are people. I will definitely be on the look-out for more Geoff North books.

4.0 out of 5 stars a very enjoyable book! September 12, 2014

This book started a little slow but it is worth reading on. I finished it the other day, have thought of it often and it brings a smile to my face. It really was an enjoyable book and I've very glad I read it. There are a few errors and yes foul language too, but that didn't bother me, after all no one has claimed that Hugh Nance was a saint! I thought it made Hugh seem more like a real person. I would recommend this to anyone who isn't bothered by foul language and enjoys a really good book to relax, set back and read.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth reading
Quite interesting and written well. Fair amount of cussing, if that puts you off. Stayed with it as I really did want to see what happened. I would recommend it.

More About the Author

Hi! I'm Geoff, and you've either stumbled onto this page by accident, or maybe you're into this kind of stuff.

I've been a voracious reader of horror, fantasy, and science fiction my entire life, but I didn't take the plunge into writing my own stories until recently. I've done a lot of stuff and seen a lot of things along the way. I've worked in hotels, managed grocery stores, dabbled in carpentry miserably, created a series of twisted comic books, and contributed political cartoons to a handful of newspapers. Maybe I needed to live life some to get where I am now - happily writing books to scare people.
