Editorial Reviews

Powerhouse Records and Tom Principato is proud to announce the Aug.18, 2009 release from Fender Telecaster icon and guitar legend and virtuoso Roy Buchanan of the CD "Roy Buchanan Live: Amazing Grace" from their "Guitarchives" Series. These recordings are rare and unreleased never heard performances and many come from the Roy Buchanan estate. Most are unknown even in "collectors" circles, and date from the period 1972 - 1983 and feature many great musicians such as Dick Heintze, Malcolm Lukens, Tom Hambridge, Robbie Magruder and many others accompanying Roy at such notable venues as the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, the Lone Star Cafe' in New York and the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas. There are 8 tracks total from 7 venues and a CD length of 45 minutes of pure Roy Buchanan at his best. A stunning version of Roy solo doing Malaguena from 1972 is a highlight. Topping off the artwork package are two archival photos taken by legendary Rolling Stone photographer Jim Marshall at one of Roy's concerts in San Francisco, Ca. in 1973.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some strong playing, but rough sound quality January 2, 2010
Format:Audio CD
If you are an obsessive Roy Buchanan fan, you will want to buy this anyway, but this is a flawed album. The highlight is a rendition of Malaguena. Roy's playing on this one was outstanding, and he played with minimal accompaniment, highlighting just how expressive he was with his Telecaster. It is also interesting to hear Roy play something Latin-inflected with his usual blues-rock gusto. In places, it even sounds a bit like surf guitar, at least in the mutant form that Roy's one-time student, Danny Gatton would occasionally play. Unfortunately, the rest of the album isn't quite as essential. There is nothing wrong with Roy's playing, nor the band's. However, the version of The Messiah Will Come Again here adds little to the several other versions that Buchanan fans no doubt already have. Likewise for Hot Cha or I'm Evil. The recording quality is also quite variable. At times, the sound is clear, and at times, less so, but there are some little clicks and pops because of flaws on the original tapes, which range from 1972 to 1983. They aren't horrible, and if you listen casually, you might not notice most of them. However, if you are planning to listen closely with headphones, they can be a bit distracting. (That is how I listen to Roy). If you are already a fan of Roy Buchanan, then Malaguena alone should be enough of a reason to pick this one up. However, if you are just starting a collection of his music and looking for some live recordings, you should start with Live in Japan, American Axe, or Live Stock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music from Roy! May 6, 2013
By JayCee
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
While I am not a musician or expert in music, I do recognize greatness when I hear it. And Roy Buchanan was one of a kind and in my opinion, the best. Innovative but at the same time, he aimed to please and that's what I get from his music, pleasure. Other reviewers can (and will) dissect sound, selection and whatever they discern as flaws but I reserve my review for what's important and that is how much I enjoy listening to Roy play the guitar and sing along.
I will add that I listen to at least one of Roy Buchanan's albums each day and I enjoy all of them. In a word, he was unique!
