They should be put into the habitat as soon as possible. However, if they have come too early, they can be put into the refrigerator for up to 4 days without harming them. **Do you send Queen Ants? Sorry, no. The USDA rules prohibit us from shipping queen ants because they do not want them to establish colonies where they do not belong. Also, ant farms are not designed to contain a large queen and the thousands of young she produces. Your ants will work without the queen. **How long will my ants live? They usually live 3 to 6 months. We've had them live as long as 8 months. **Can I use the same sand for my 2nd batch of ants? Yes. The sand is good for at least 2 batches of ants before it needs to be replaced. Just sift out dead ants and old food and put back into your farm **Replacement sand and gel is available in our Amazon store www.amazon.com/shops/naturegiftstore

I ordered these ants expecting to bolster my already impressive ant farm...a full 12'x9' wall of glass and a real focal point in my apartment. As an avid myrmecologist, I have successfully gotten multiple species to live and work in harmony over the years. Carpenter Ants, Fire Ants, Argentines, even the normally aggressive Army Ants. All of them serving the greater good, thriving. Even a layman could tell you the next logical step for growing the community was obviously red Harvesters.

About half of the ants were alive and well when they arrived, the rest, not so much. I added the whole tube into the colony as I've found the communal mourning process helps to create an almost fraternal bond when integrating a new breed. All of my experience, all of my research, everything I thought I thought I knew about ant culture could not prepare me for what happened next. The ones that had appeared deceased had just been in some sort of catatonic state, and before long, possibly due to the nutritious nature of the soil or possibly due to some unholy sort of necromancy, they began to stir, to rise.

Initially, the whole colony appeared to celebrate. It seemed to be a momentous occasion, but as I excitedly jotted down notes in my journal...or ANThology if you will ;)...the risen quickly began turning on their brethren. They were noticeably more aggressive, biting at the heads of others, yet for some reason I've not yet accounted for, slower. They began to cannibalize the other ants, but this was not your run of the mill larval consumption for purposes of population control. It was chaos and panic all throughout. Frantic migrations and glass tappings in an effort to escape. As the initial dozen or so feasted, more and more ants began to take on these characteristics...this, hunger.

My son had an unused ant farm that had been in his room for years. My daughter wanted an ant farm, so my son couldn't resist the re-gifting opportunity. All we needed were the ants.

I have to admit, I was skeptical making this purchase, as I had never done mail-order on anything living before. I figured that some would be dead on arrival, and the others would last maybe a few weeks.

When the ants arrived, all were alive, in a well-sealed package containing a small piece of carrot that kept their hunger at bay while in transit.

In the first few days, we had a couple of casualties, but the rest soldiered on. After a couple months, maybe 4 others were laid to rest. I was amazed at the longevity of the others, most of which lasted beyond 3 months, with the last ones finally joining their brethren toward the 4-month mark.

My whole family was mesmerized by these industrious creatures, whose work included digging several tunnels and encasing their fallen compatriots in the gelatinous substance they were eating and tunneling through.

Fast delivery, 100% survival on arrival, and longevity - with this type of purchase, who could ask for anything more? We're very satisfied customers and would order again from this company... if only my son had another ant farm to re-gift.

I've had ant farms for a while, and have renewed my joy in them. These ants did arrive vibrant and active, however even though I promptly opened the package when it arrived, 5 of the ants were very dismembered and dead. This was unusual in my experience, and I'm not sure reflects on the quality of the product. I have had ants arrive in slightly larger tubes before with no dead, and I don't know it crowding has any factor. All in all, so far, it was a good product, but wish a few more ants had arrived alive. They do really well in the gel medium also.

All ants alive and well. Refrigerating kept them for sleepy for 10 days. Little heat and they were off to building the farm.

Ants! Lots of them. A couple were dead on arrival but that is expected I guess. They are in an airtight container! We put them in the fridge for about 20 minutes. They were all curled up by then. I moved all of them to the ant farm by AntWorks and thought they were all dead. It took them about 5 minutes to get warm again and they started moving. In another 20 minutes they were digging!
Definitely recommend getting ants for ant farm rather than hunting for them in your backyard.

Great product. They seem to have taken to the ant farm extremely well. I was wary that I would have wasted some money purchasing a bunch of dead ants, but in the end I had nothing to worry about.

When I ordered these ants, I read the special warnings about shipments made to cold temperature locations. I live in Nebraska. When I ordered the ants, our temperatures were above the required temperatures. Nature Gift Store is located in Washington. While in transit between Washington and Nebraska, the Western States had below freezing temperatures. When the ants arrive at my house, all of them were dead. I contacted Nature Gift Store through Amazon. I received a full refund. No questions asked. That's good customer service.
