There's no shortage of live albums on Billy Joe Shaver, including well-picked gigs from the `80s (Live from Austin, TX) and `90s (Storyteller: Live at the Bluebird and Unshaven: Live at Smith's Olde Bar), but when you're an honest-to-God troubadour, each performance is a unique combination of people, place and songs. This two-disc (CD/DVD) document of Shaver's September 2011 show at Billy Bob's Texas, is just as essential as the earlier volumes. Though one could never expect Shaver to fully recover from the passing of his son Eddy, he sounds more energized - and less haunted -than he's appeared in several years. No doubt the stage is both a reminder and a sanctuary, and he throws himself into these songs in a way younger performers couldn't even imagine. His voice sounds great, and his band plays in a deep, empathetic pocket.

The set list holds few surprises for Shaver's fans, but mostly because they're so fervent about his music. Those new to Shaver's catalog will find many of his best-known songs here, and even his most well-traveled tunes are sung with enthusiasm for words that clearly remain both important and true. The two new titles are the Johnny Cash-styled "Wacko from Waco," recounting a 2007 shooting incident (also memorialized in Dale Watson's "Where Do You Want It?"), and "The Git Go," deftly casting modern ills against biblical antecedents of temptation, truth and fate. Studio versions of the new tunes are also included as bonuses.

Billy Joe Shaver is an icon and this package will help explain why to people who are new to his music. The set list for this concert contains many of his classics including Live Forever, Chunk of Coal, and Georgia on a Fast Train.

I also liked the inclusion of the DVD, although I agree with other reviewers that the additional interviews could have been left out. Having seen Billy Joe live a few times, the DVD is a great way to experience his latest concerts. For old fans, this is a welcome addition to the collection. For new fans, this is a great introduction to one of the best artists Texas has ever produced.

Billy Joe Shaver has done it again. Thisis a great CD. Billy's voice is in fine form. He rehashes some old tunes here live however, he gives new energy to them. I am a big Billy Jo fan and he tells the story of his arrest and aquittal several years ago in Waco Texas. He has a lot of fun on this CD and you will too unpon listening to it. His backup band has got it going on also. Good music, great artist and good old country rock music. What else could you ask for?

Even though I have some of these songs on other CD's, it was still an awesome purchase for me. The DVD is fun--watching Billy Joe, on the DVD or in person is a treat. He and his music have enriched my life--and I couldn't say enough good things about Billy Bob's Texas. I'm not even a Texan, I live in Washington, DC.

The Smith Music group has been releasing their series of "Live From Billy Bob's Texas" for quite a few years. Most are audio only, while a few include a DVD (as well as the CD) of the performance. That's the case on this new 2012 release. Billy Joe Shaver has been writing hit songs - many covered by Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings since the 1970s - and, as my fellow reviewer, Hyperbolium, states, there are other DVDs of Shaver in performance. This, however, is the most recent and Shaver is obviously showing his age in both his voice and his energy. For this gig he was backed by a trio of musicians easily half his age and, while TWICE he picks up a guitar to start a song, he soon puts it down and lets the band play the music. It's only on the song " Old Five and Dimes" that he plays his acoustic guitar all the way through. (At one point in a song - I forget which one now - he gives guitarist Jeremy Lynn Woodall a long solo and kneels down on stage for a rest. (of course, none of this comes across on the audio CD, where he actually sounds younger.). The Audio CD also eliminates the spoken introductions as well as 4 brief "testimonials" to Shaver's writing by Willie Nelson and Pat Green, and adds studio versions of the two NEW songs ("Wacko from Waco"; "The Git Go") as "bonus tracks. The DVD portion runs 75-minutes.

Shaver doesn't travel a lot - I missed a chance to see him showcase at the Americana Music Festival in Nashville last month, so this set is an easy way to see (and hear him) in a recent performance. And the combo-pack is a good value priced a only a bit more than a single audio CD.

I hope that Smith Music Group continues to visit Billy Bob's Texas and capture the performances there. They've preserved some legendary performances.

I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.
