5.0 out of 5 stars No fluff, no jump, just right..., December 29, 2005

This is the title I recommend for people who are ready to move beyond the fluffy "jazz vocals" of Diana Krall or Jamie Cullum. Deanna Kirk actually sings in a jazz style, approaching lyrics by way of early Peggy Lee. She just sounds like she's having a blast performing in her club, and the feeling is infectuous. I also give this cd extra points for bringing in the "rock" standards Who Knows Where The Time Goes (Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention) and Suzanne (Leonard Cohen).

It's not experimental or "jump" as, say, Patricia Barber, but I haven't heard any other modern singer that's following the traditional female vocal path. Also recommended if you like Fiona Apple's take on pop singing.

I love singers. its rare to find a new, interesting, swinging voice out there these days. they all sound alike...or worse: fake. not this lady. she's for real. can cook with the best! put this on your must list. it's good!
