When Art Blakey made his mighty entrance in the 1980's in full energetic force,
he would stun jazz fans with a special all-star ensemble he gave at The Montreux
and The Northsea Jazz Festival in 1980 that was met with great acclaim. Recor-
ded sporadically the two jazz festivals, Live At Montreux And Northsea features a
breathless all-star line-up of Jazz Messengers that include Bobby Watson, Valery
Ponemarev, James Williams, Bill Pierce and even debut appearances by Wynton
and Branford Marsalis as well as Kevin and Robin Eubanks. Well-showcased by
high-swinging solos and well-casted performances recorded in a brief, but slightly
thrilling rate, this fascinating live recording from Blakey and his college of musical
knowledge become highly focused with direct musicianship and visually enhance
form that makes this compelling hit such a wonderful music experience to behold.
Backed with a vibrant track set, it features such showstopping hits like the James
Williams-penned Minor Thesis, as well as Wheel Within A Wheel and also Bit Of
Bittatose, composed with striking utmost skill by Bobby Watson and their take on
Stairway To The Stars, as it make this timeless achievement an important must.

Format: Audio CD
it started out with a wynton marsalis compilation, which was really an art blakey compilation featuring wynton. while most of the original compositions were brilliant, some of the standards were not. so i began looking for albums that had the originals but not the standards. so after some time of collecting albums, i finally and only through amazon bought this the last album that completed the process, in particular the tracks 'wheel within a wheel' & 'bit a bittadose'. i have a few of art blakeys jazz messengers from this period and it is by far my favourite. i can not, should not and will not comment on the playing or the recording, but the compositions are some of the best from this period.
