Not being heavily into the music scene, I rely on happenstance to discover new artists. An annual event for me is the Sisters (Oregon) Folk Festival every fall, where someone or a group stands out. This year it was John Fullbright. His performance was amazing -- great lyrics and fine musicianship, especially on keyboard. He comes across as a mix of early Dylan and John Prine, with a bit of early Tom Waits (when you could still understand the guy). Live at the Blue Door contains many of the pieces he performed at SFF, my favorite being "Blameless," which is one of the best things I've heard in many a year. Unfortunately, his instruments on the album do not include keyboard, but he's no slouch on the guitar and harp. He projects a perspective and wisdom that seems far beyond his young years, and given some time I think will evolve into a major writer/player in the folk music scene. Sadly, the album is not presently available in CD format, so for a luddite like myself it's a bit of chore to transfer it onto disc. But it's worth the trouble. His new album, From the Ground Up, is available on CD but unfortunately does not include "Blameless." I'm hoping he sees fit to patch that tune into whatever is coming down the pike. Spend some time with his music, and see him live if you can -- you won't regret it.

I bought this after listening to John Fulbright's interview on NPR (and why doesn't NPR have a link to Amazon on its website? To buy music, you have to go out on your own. Not a hardship, just odd.) I like his music and use it to unwind. I pair it with Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss for a nice end to the day.

John Fullbright may not ever be as "popular" as he should be given our teenage-controlled-corporate music infrastructure. But he is amazing and I don't doubt his name will continue to become known. There is a timeless/ageless quality to his music that includes real spiritual depth.

John Fullbright is an awesome talent. Very soulful and insightful for a young man. I cannot wait to watch him grow and see what's next for him.

John Fullbright, Old Soul in a young Body. I can't say enough about this young man. Thoughtful song writing and perfect delivery. For some reason, the price of this CD went way up, almost triple the cost of From The Ground Up.
