GREAT WESTERN SWING WITH A HISTORY LESSON,
By
This review is from: Live from Austin, TX: Asleep at the Wheel (DVD)
If you're looking for an introduction to Asleep At The Wheel, this is an excellent sample. You will see them do one toe tappin' (or boot scootin') tune after another and then lead singer, Ray Benson takes on Eddy Arnold's "You Don't Know Me" and makes it his own. They pay tribute to Bob Wills, the father of western swing by inviting former members of his group, The Texas Playboys (ca 1940), to join them on stage to sing and play. I was only disappointed by their slowing down the tempo of their hit, "Route 66", to match the original Playboys' version. I look forward to Asleep At The Wheel putting out more DVDs.

Outstanding!!!! You get Asleep at the Wheel (which is a 7 piece band), plus, you get 4 remaining members of Bob Will's Texas Playboys. This concert was filmed October 14, 1992. You get 14 great songs, featuring their favorites: "Hot Rod Lincoln", "Corine Corina", and "Boogie Back to Texas".The line-up for Alseep at the Wheel consists of: Ray Benson on lead vocals & guitar Tim Alexander on piano/vocals Cindy Cashdollar Hawallian guitar Mike Franis on saxaphone Ricky Turpin on fiddle, mandocaster, & vocals David Earl Miller on bass/vocals David Sanger on drums The 4 "Texas Playboys" line-up is as follows: (These guys are old, but they can still really play & sing good!!!, Plus it's like watching a piece of History). I congratulate Alseep at the Wheel for having they guys on as guest musicians.) The Texas Playboys: Eldon Shamblim on guitar Johnny Gimble on fiddle & Mandolin Leon Raush on lead vocals Herb Remington on pedal steel guitar The song set is as follows: 1.Black & White Rag 2.Miles & Miles of Texas 3.Boot Schoot Boogie 4.You Don't Know Me 5.Hot Rod Lincoln 6.Boogie Back to Texas 7.The House of Blue Lights 8.Fat Boy Rag 9.Get Your Kicks (on Route 66) 10.Corine Corina 11.Blues for Dixie 12.Roly Poly 13.Misery 14.Sugar Moon The approx. run time is 65 minutes. This is a great concert. Ray Benson does an excellent job as the lead man. Plus, it's a special treat to see these 4 remaining "Texas Playboys". If you like "Western Swing", or Texas Country Rock, then you should love this one. Thanks!!!!!
