3.0 out of 5 stars Fats in his later years.
The soundtrack is rather poor, the DVD is short, and the camera work is mediocre at best. But it is still "Fats", just as good in later years.

This is an outstanding DVD,support the series, and we can look forward to more great music.

This review is from: Live From Austin TX: Fats Domino (DVD)
This DVD available performance is over 20 years-old and it still
brought tears of joy watching it. Fats Domino was 58 years old when he performed on Austin City Limits. It might as well have been 1949 or 1959. Fats is one of an extremly few, and I do mean extremely few, artists who sound in a live performance just as they do on their original recordings. Many of the great players who have been a part of Fats' recording career were on hand for this concert. Dave Bartholomew, Lee Allen, Freddie Kemp and the still "master of the sax" Herb Hardesty.
Fats and his crew were in top shape for this affair and they most obviously were having fun. Of course, in a 17 song concert
there were some great hits that had to be missed. Most notably absent were the top 10 hits "Valley Of Tears" and its flip side top 10 hit "It's You I Love". Also no time for "Whole Lotta Lovin' or "Be My Guest". But it was great to witness his perfomances of other top 20 classics "My Blue Heaven", "Let The Four Winds Blow", "My Girl Josephine" "Three Nights A Week" and the vastly undervalued "I'm Ready. Fats didn't forget the pre-"Blueberry Hill" hits either. "Poor Me", "All My Myself" and the top 10 hit "Ain't That A Shame" (Incorectly labeled "Ain't It A Shame" when it was released in 1955).
You don't even have to be a Fats fanatic, such as I, to enjoy this DVD 100%. If you've ever heard a Fats Domino song that should be enough motivation for you to pick up this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true original, January 12, 2007

Fats Domino is simply that. One of the classic performers Fat's is true to his music as are all originals remembered for being themselves rather that immatating someone else. This performance was recorded late in 1986 and Fats Domino appears to have made time stand still with his easy appealing style. The smile and rolling eyes hadn't changed in the thirty odd years he had been performing these songs. I always appreciate it when an artist performs their classics as they originally recorded them and thats what he does here "I'm Walking", "I Want To Walk You Home","Walking To New Orleans" and "Ain't That A Shame" all great.

I bought this DVD for my Dad for Father's Day. By the time the paper hit the floor from the packaging, the DVD was in the machine and we were treated to a superb performance by the man himself Fats Domino. His music is timeless and full of energy. This man is truly a lengend and this DVD is a must have.

When last did I enjoy a music dvd like this one. (and I have a fairly big variety/ collection) This is not one of those dvd's that you'll watch once or twice, place with your collection, and then again listen to it once in while thereafter - no you'll pop it out quiet regularly and enjoy it again as for the first time.
Fats and his producers knew exactly what was expected from them to bring the real domino on stage and to your screen. In his time and genre, he must have been a `liberace' and `pavirotto' in his own. He has a strong and clear voice and shows no effort whatsoever to produce pure tones. Most of all, he enjoys in what he is doing and does it with total commitment - no gimmicks or pretensions. No wonder that groups and singers such as `the beatles', `elvis presley' and others had so much admiration for fats. It won't come as a surprise if fats wasn't , directly or indirectly, a mentor to many of his contemporaries and later groups/singers. This man is a natural and talented master musician.
Of course his most popular song must be the all famous `blueberry hill' but even songs that I did not listen to regularly before on cd, are now more popular to me since viewing this dvd. He gives `blue monday' rather a `i'm a ready for the whole week,' colour. Most of his favourite hits are compiled on this dvd, but it would have been a personal bonus to me, had they recorded domino's version of `red sails in the sunset' as well.
How fortunate and privileged are those who could have been part of the audience for this show.
Wouldn't it be great if domino and sledge could have compiled a combo dvd of the same quality with their long time hits, to show the world what true music is all about ?
Not repeating the title listing seeing it is already in some of the other reviews.
This dvd has an appropriate dts sound distribution and is `loud' and clear. The dts sound fills the room. Footage of each title track is to the full without any unnecessary interruptions, and the picture quality is good.
If words such as nostalgia, enjoyment, quality, anthology, appreciation, treasure and commitment are part of your music vocabulary, then this is a definite buy for you.
A collector's and non-collector's dream.
Thx
andré

5.0 out of 5 stars "Fats" Domino & His 14 Piece Band Perform Some Outstanding "New Orleans" R & B and Rock & Roll in Austin, Texas !!!!!!, March 21, 2009
This review is from: Live From Austin TX: Fats Domino (DVD)
SIMPLY AN OUTSTANDING CONCERT DVD. It consists of 17 great songs, performed with a 14 piece New Orleans band, including Dave Bartholomew. Most of the songs performed in this concert, were written by the legendary song-writing team of "Fats" Domino & Dave Bartholomew. The band consists of 2 guitar players, 1 bass player, 2 drummers, 5 saxophone players, 2 trumpet players (including Dave Bartholomew), and 2 piano players - featuring "Fats" Domino on the lead piano and on vocals.

This was filmed/recorded on October 22, 1986 on the Austin City Limits TV show.

Some of the highlights include: "I'm Walkin'", "My Girl Josephine", "Walking to New Orleans" (This one's a classic), "Shake, Rattle & Roll", "Ain't That a Shame" (Another classic), "I Hear You Knocking", "Blueberry Hill" (Another classic - and "Fats" dedicates the song to the late/great Elvis Presley), "Your Cheatin' Heart" (A Hank Williams classic, well performed by "Fats" & his band), and "Three Nights a Week".

This is a great concert dvd by "Fats" & his band, and I highly recommend it. Thanks!!!!
