Try this:

1) Come to a peaceful point in your life where, at least for the moment, all is well with your world.

2) Fire up the backyard grill and prepare some burgers, steaks, chops, whatever you want.

3) Pour yourself a big drink (I recommend a margarita or a big ol' Dos Equis, something with a Tex-Mex flavor)

4) While the fire is going, put on Live from Austin, Texas by the Sir Douglas Quintet

5) If you're not in the best mood you've ever been in your life by the time "(Is Anybody Goin' To) San Antone" comes on, you may very well be dead.

I promise you, by the time you get to "Ya No Llores," you will know the meaning of pure bliss.

Recorded for the Austin City Limits televion show in 1981, this CD is an expanded edition of that show. Doug Sahm is joined by Augie Myers and original Quintet drummer John Perez, along with son Shawn Sahm on rhytm guitar, Speedy Sparks on bass, and Alvin Crow on guitar. This is just a fantastic CD for several reasons. For one thing, there aren't many available live releases by Doug Sahm or the Sir Douglas Quintet and this fills that void; they play the hits and more - including material from the out-of-print album "Border Wave," and this CD sounds fantastic! Doug and Augie and the rest of the band sound great and the tune selection from early hits "She's About a Mover" and Mendocino" to later songs like "San Antone" and "It Was Fun While It Lasted" is wonderful. It's not a reissue, so I don't know what to call it, but if you're a fan of roots rock and/or Doug Sahm you should get it. Let's hope more great music will come from the Austin City Limits vaults.

This concert by Sir Doug in January 1981 has a good sound but is very lacking in guitar. It mostly consists of Augies organ and relies on nothing else. Alot of the Quintets best songs are =missing and it lacks hardly any of the Doug Sahm blues feelings. The songs in the concert were too short and at sometimes mingled together wich resulted in a lack of feeling and soul. The cd is ok--don't get me wrong. It is just that I expected a whole lot more--more rock and blues. Followers of this group shoud try ro get the 1994 cd Daydreaming at Midnight (out of print) which is one of the best albums this group ever made. Straight out rock and roll and blues. You need to get this one.
