Norah Jones "Little Broken Hearts"

Biography

Sultry vocalist and pianist Norah Jones developed her unique blend of jazz and traditional vocal pop with hints of bluesy country and contemporary folk due in large part to her unique upbringing. Born March 30, 1979, in New York City, the daughter of Ravi Shankar quietly grew up in Texas with her mother. While she always found the music of Billie Holiday and Bill Evans both intriguing and ... I like Norah's laid back and smooth voice but it is not smooth here.

Having seen Norah live, I'm especially aware of how difficult it is to bring a live performance to just about any other medium. This DVD comes pretty close. Sound quality is good, camera work is also good. In both cases, I'd expect nothing less from Austin City Limits. The Handsome Band suffers, I think, from the departure of Robbie McIntosh for other groups and venues. A second electric guitar would help some of the arrangements. M. Ward is a "special guest" on several songs, but adds nothing of note or interest, leaving me wondering why he was included at all. The essentials, that Norah Jones voice, the interesting and eclectic selection of songs and music, are all here. It's not a perfect concert DVD, but I have yet to find a concert DVD I thought was perfect. This one is very good, especially if you're a fan of Norah Jones' music.

Expect sibilance on all but finely tuned turntables. During her vocal peaks, her mic gain seems a tad bit too high.

However, it sounds good and I am enjoying it. No miss-tracking or miss-tracing using a Yamaha PX-3. Perhaps this LP was intended for audiophiles with good equipment.

Highly doubt you will get good results on your Crosley.

I absolutely love Norah Jones--I think she is one of the great jazz/folk singers of our generation. Unfortunately, I think that this record was pressed rather badly, as I've read other reviews that it skips in multiple places. My record player is really standard, not like a high quality thing for djs or whatever, so maybe it would work better with something better, but still I was disappointed. In fact it was skipping so much I had to turn it off. Oh the unadulterated horror!

Listening to the vinyl version right now. Off the bat i agree with other posters, her mic seems to clip on louder sections, but worse, she is mixed way too front and centre. There is no attempt at a soundstage, and sounds like its straight from the board. For those wanting something leaps and bounds better than this, download or buy Stacey Kent live. French, but the french know what they are doing at least!
