5.0 out of 5 stars A real winner!, August 21, 2007
This review is from: Live at B.B. King Blues Club (Audio CD)
I was in the audience when this show was recorded at BB Kings in New York. This is actually a live broadcast from XM satelite radio which aired the show live that night to a nationwide audience. In attendnance that night: Little Steven (a BIG Yardbirds fan) and their first manager Giorgio Gomelsky. I had been on tour with The Yardbirds for the North American leg of this tour and in fact had set up the live broadcast with XM Radio. The younger members of the band (lead guitarist Ben King in particular were a bit nervous about the broadcast as XM Radio has an audience of over 6 million.) But the performance was just brilliant that night. The song selection superb. A perfect mix of the old classics and newer material from their 2003 studio album 'Birdland'...Jim McCarty had never drummed better, Chris Dreja (The Dapper Mr D. was spot on that night as well) Long time vocalist John Idan was visibly enjoying himself and harmonica man Billy Boy Miskimmin was blowing up a blue streak. Ben King (lead guitar) is really the best guitarist the band has had since Jeff Beck left. No kidding, folks. He's fantastic. (Photos of that night are available at WWW.Yardbirds.US) This is a must have for any Yardbirds fan. Consider yourselves lucky. This album isnt available in the shops here in the U.S. Grab it! Play It! Dig It!

I was lucky enough to attend a show at the very end of the same tour that this recording is from. South Lake Tahoe, is one of the current band's favorite stops, and I'll be there when this great group returns here.

The Yardbirds are BACK, and they mean business. This combination of players {two seasoned veterans and three exciting new players} is a full-on force of blues/rock and pop greatness!

With Ben King following in the steps of Clapton/Beck and Page, the band is at a peak, not seen in concert since 1966. And this CD is the document of just what they now do every night on stages around the world. This is NO tribute band, it's the real deal...The Yardbirds are back, and they DO put on a great show!

From the opener: "Train Kept a Rollin' through to: "Happenings 10 Years Time Ago" the great classics are mixed with new Yardbird tunes. And here are 19 reasons of why anyone who has seen the current band has been raving about just how great The Yardbirds have become once more.

No, this isn't the full concert (that would take 2 CD's) but, this is more than a sampler of their show. And, it is the finest blues and rock played with absolute fire that I have heard in years. Rock is dead they say...."Long Live Rock"
This is a great band and the proof of that can be found on this CD.
Four Stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Ever Yardbirds, August 30, 2007

This review is from: Live at B.B. King Blues Club (Audio CD)
This is the best yardbirds album/band ever. I saw them live in Stuart, Fl. This album captures the excitement of that performance in a small theater. McCarty and Dreja show that they were the true backbone of the band all along. Idan does an excellent job on bass and vocals, Billy is an excellent addition and Ben King does an admirable job on guitar. I'd recommend this cd to any Yardbirds fan!!! I hope they continue to tour and write new songs. Their new songs are every bit as good as the classics!! See them live!

I was really surprised how good this CD is. I usually don't like "live" CDs too often, they just don't live up to their studio performances and especially when the musicians aren't the original members! This CD kills- great sound, great performances, great songs!

I regret missing the Yardbirds at B.B. King's this month. Even more so after hearing this cd. Original members McCarty And Dreja haven't lost a thing. The newer members are all top notch. If you are a fan of the Yardbirds or just great music. this is for you. Rock On.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect!!, January 10, 2011

First off I must admit to being a long time (original era) Yardbirds fan. Like thousands (hundreds of thousands) of guitar players who learned to play in the 60's, the Yardbirds "Having a Rave Up" with Jeff Beck's leads, was my tudor and musical bible. I followed Jimmy Page when he changed the bands name from The New Yardbirds to Led Zepplin (after all the original members left) and faithfully followed Beck and Clapton into their solo efforts. Jeff's work contniues to insire me.
I have also been to BB KING's in New York City approximately 15-20 times over the past few years and I can tell you that it is the ultimate place to see any band. The acoustics are the best, the clubs PA system is state of the art and you are never more than 50-75 feet from the stage anywhere in the room. It is a very intimate and well thought out club.
Combine a legendary band and a really nice concert venue and you have the ingredients for a great show. That is what you get on this CD. Yardbirds originals Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty have put together a well oiled and great sounding band that does a beautiful job of recreating the sound of the original Yardbirds from each era of the bands famous lead guitar changes (Clapton to Beck to Page). The guitar solos are mostly note-for-note recreations but played with enough energy to make them sound refreshing. They play all the major Yardbirds hits and most liked album tracks and even toss in some new stuff and a smokin' version of "Back Where I Started" which is a Box Of Frogs tune from Chris and Jim's 1984 band (the two Box Of Frogs albums featuring studio work from both Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck). The show with all of it's between song intro's is presented here in a nicely produced package. Get this CD. You will not be disappointed.
Long live the Yardbirds!!

At first I was reluctant to purchase a cd by a band with only two original band members left but then I realized that The Yardbirds were always an ever changing band. This is one of the finest lineups yet playing all thier hits live(it's hard to find a Yardbirds compilation with all their hits). Just great non-stop blues-fusion.
