Unique sound that emphasizes on collective talents,
By
This review is from: Live at the Backgate Stage (Audio CD)
Every band faces the challenge of developing a unique sound and entertaining show that capitalize on the collective talents of all the band's members. That is Misty River's strength. Dana Abel, Chris Kokesh, Laura Quigley and Carol Harley are four women who all sing and play accordion, fiddle, bass, guitar and clawhammer banjo. They present highly-arranged songs that span the genres of traditional and contemporary folk, bluegrass, country and Celtic from such diverse songwriters as Marshall Wilborn, Alan O'Bryant, Kate Wolf, Bill Staines, Tim O'Brien, Carter Stanley, Lyle Lovett and Shawn Colvin. Thus, Misty River's music is best labelled "Americana," and they are part of the growing movement that correlates to an aesthetic style that exhibits honesty and a healthy respect for roots music influenced by other stylings. Misty River's "Live at the Backgate Stage" will serve to introduce and treat a larger audience to their rootsy new traditional sound. While Misty River has already accomplished a lot in their five years together, I believe that this album will be the springboard to further launch this professional band from the Northwest to the main musical highways of America. This album will also serve as a great remembrance for anyone who catches this hard-working band on their many travels. The recording quality of this 17-track live album is first rate, with good balance and mix. "Live at the Backgate Stage" successfully embodies the beautiful musical spirit of Misty River, although only one original (Dana Abel's "Misty River" is offered). There are some excellent songwriters in Misty River, and I would've liked to have seen a few more of their signature originals included. On a positive note, live albums capture a band's energy and spirit, but unfortunately they also include slightly annoying applause after each track. All in all, this album is a very pleasing aural experience. Misty River is carving a distinctive musical niche for themselves by offering entertaining shows characterized by passionate singing and unpretentious instrumental work. "Live at the Backgate Stage" is a lovely CD that brings Misty River's exuberance and spirit right to your own living room. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

No better "americana" music available.,

These four ladies are extremely talented musicians and truly unique vocalists. You will not hear harmonies like this from anyone else we know. Most bands are fortunate to have one really good singer. This band has four. The album is a very entertaining mix of folk, country, bluegrass, old-time and whatever. Not a bad cut on this collection. Highly recommended.

I've had the extreme pleasure to hear Misty River live. This CD is a perfect example of one of their performances. Their harmonization is without peer, their musical skills and timing are text-book, and the emotional content of their work lets you know that they are doing these performances from their love of the craft. As much as I liked "Rising", this album surpasses it. It would be hard to limit myself to a few favorites, but I would have to say that their version of "Shotgun down the Avalanche" is truly memorable. These are also kind, good, and gentle people. I wish them great success, and also hope that none of the usual drawbacks of success hampers them. They deserve far more recognition than they have received.

I was there when this recording was done. These ladies are so loaded with talent, it is incredible. Not only are they absolutely gifted artists, they are as sweet and down to earth as is humanly possible. They are bright, talented and give to their audience to make emotions spout. Suffice it to say, they will move you. Buy this CD.

The Northwest's Greatest Secret,

I've seen this Oregon-based quartet perform live several times. Their harmonies make you cry and their musicianship makes you gasp. They are one of the Pacific Northwest's great secrets and great pleasures. Of all their CDs, this one may do the best job of showcasing their versatility. They cover Gillian Welch, Kate Wolf, Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, old standards, obscurities, original material, and more. If you like sincere and authentic Americana, you can't go wrong with Misty River.

Who knew there was so much excellent bluegrass/folk music out there? Misty River's "Live at the Backgate Stage" is fantastic. Purchased as a Christmas present for my wife, the whole family enjoys this CD. Great music with smooth vocals. A real thumbs-up for this one.
