Somewhat in agreement with [others],

This review is from: Live Between Us (Audio CD)
While I would agree that Live Between Us isn't the finest representation of The Hip's prolific stage show -- not by a longshot, as a matter of fact -- it is nonetheless a tight, diversified live album with a marvelous setlist and a refreshingly "uncut" feel to it. Admittedly, I found Gord's ramblings on this performance a little underwhelming, even bordering on silly and pretentious at times, but there are still a few gems to be had, such as the "CD-ROM age" line as well as some hilarious lyric-swapping and improvisation. I was also initially disappointed at the absence of At The Hundredth Meridian or a more exploratory version of New Orleans Is Sinking, but there are still some excellent jams on there, such as the ones tacked onto the ends of Ahead By A Century and Nautical Disaster. And, as I said, the setlist is awesome; any show with The Luxury, Giftshop, Scared, Twist My Arm and Blow At High Dough is worth having in your collection. If you're a fan of The Tragically Hip, get this album, no question. If you're not, you should probably hunt down some of their studio stuff first and see what you think. (I'd recommend Day For Night or Fully Completely.)That being said, the finest live recording by this band would have to be on the bootleg disc entitled "Roxy & Elsewhere." The performance is dead-on, the jams are incredible, and the stream-of-consciousness rants are just insanely brilliant and entertaining. Anyone whose hair stands on end whenever the hear the phrase "killer whale tank" knows exactly what I mean. Get your hands on this at all costs.

Tragically Hip is the way to go,
By Rachel (VERMONT) - See all my reviews

I own all of the tragically hip CD's and out of all of them i like this one the most. In the beginning of the songs Gordon adds some thoughts...that really make you think. A lot of there songs just touch me...Ahead by a century, giftshop, nautical disaster, grace too and much much more. If you do not have this CD i urge you to go out and buy it...it all depends if you like the songs live. I just recently saw them live and it was the best thing that i did all summer, I am looking forward to another concert in the near future. My love goes out to Tragically Hip..

Live Between Us,

Excellent. The disc does take some getting used to, however. I have played it nearly non stop since purchasing it, and the more I play it the better it gets. It can not compete with the actual live experience but it a nice daily substitute.

I Said "I'm Tragically Hip, Come On Just Let's Go"...,

... She sort of bit her lip, "Gee I don't know"
This was my first ever Tragically Hip CD and (moreover) one of the first CDs that I ever owned. So, I have a bit of a bias in its favour. That being said, there is no better introduction to the Hip than their stellar live album "Live Between Us". This CD offers hit after hit and really captures some of the tremendous energy of the Hip live. Ive seen them 4 times now and those have been some of my favourite concerts ever. Ive never been disappointed by the Hip live, and you won't be disappointed by this. I would hesitate to recommend this album to the seasoned Hip collector, as it doesn't add that much to the studio versions and there are many, many great live Hip tracks widely available to download ("Killer Whale Tank", anyone?). But, it is still a great CD and is far from a waste of money All in all, this is a awesome live CD from a awesome live band.

The Hip at their finest,

As a long time listener to "The Hip" transplated to the good ol U.S of A I turn all my friends into Hip fans with this one.. Some of the most recent work they have done shows more maturity, but this is a great intro to a great Canadian Band...

"Live Between Us" is the only live CD i have ever heard that captures the whole experience of a concert. You can feel the crowd from beginning to end...The CD captures the unmistakeable presence of Gord D as he hammers oot the lyrics...from The Luxury to Nautical Disaster...this CD captures all that a live show is...and more

Great for a new fan!,

I would suggest this CD to anyone as a good choice for their first Tragically Hip CD. I got interested in the Hip and picked this one up and fell in love with them. I now own Phantom Power, Music @ Work, and Fully Completely. This CD is still my favorite from the group but the others are great too and I might be biased by it being my first... Check out the Tragically Hip, even (or especially) if you live in an area where no one knows who the Hip are...

The Greatest live CD you've never heard!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Live Between Us (Audio CD)
This great Canadian band, although little known to most Americans, is probably the greatest band you've never heard of. Their smooth rock licks, outstanding lyrics and unprecedented cult following make them the exception to the downfall of rock-n-roll in North America. So much energy is captured in this live CD, and this doesn't even scratch the surface of thier live power!

Tragically Hip - A Double Album Would Have Been Better But Very Good For What Is Here,

I had friends that were into the Tragically Hip back in the early 90's, but the band really never did a lot for me. That was up until I saw them live opening for Eric Johnson in Grand Rapids Michigan. The show was fantastic and really blew me away. I eventually picked up this live album from the band and it is indeed a very nice introduction to their material. The Tragically Hip are huge in their native Canada, achieving a much smaller yet loyal audience here in the States. There is something about this band live that does not seem to be captured on their studio stuff. Singer Gordon Downie is a unique individual. In a live environement he often goes into spoken word rants which are only touched on in this disc. In fact most of the tracks are rather short and the album probably would have benefited if it were a double instead. The band tends to stretch things out a bit in concert, but with the single disc format it appears that they tried to get as many tracks as they could on here. Overall this is an excellent album and always makes me want to pick up more of The Hip's stuff when I pull it out.

THE essential live Hip album,
By Kurse (Buffalo) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live Between Us (Audio CD)
It is very easy to get excited about this CD when you look at the set list for this concert. A solid arrangement of singles and classics along with other songs not as popular such as The Wherewithal and Don't Wake Daddy make it timeless. I can easily see myself picking this CD up again and enjoying it just as much 10 years from now.
When buying and listening to live albums of any band I always look for a few distinct qualities: Set list, length, quality of recording, amounts of ad-libbing, and crowd interaction. This album fails in none of those departments! The song choices for the concert is excellent in my opinion, the quality is equivalent to a studio recording, and the crowd is heard well throughout the whole CD. The only possible drawbacks are that sometimes Gordy gets a little long-winded between verses and songs. Although it'll never bother me, I can see it being a low point for some listeners. Finally, even though its 14 tracks long I still would wish for more tracks but I think that's just me being greedy. Buy this!! |
