Editorial Reviews

He set out to be a songwriter, but his incredible voice brought Gary Stewart to the studio and stage--where he became one of the greatest hardcore honky-tonkers of the '70s.

5.0 out of 5 stars King of the Honky-Tonks May 18, 2003
Format:Audio CD
King of the Honky-Tonks, Gary Stewart has proved once again why he has "staying power". In a day and age of "pop" country music, Stewart still packs the house and fills the dance floor. I was there the night this album was recorded, and found I still love the songs I grew up listening to. The band on this album proves musical talent beyond belief, proving once again how Texas Honky
Tonk just can't be beat. I tip my hat to Glenn, Curtis, Dick, Steve, Tim and of course Gary for releasing such a great live recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Killer Smooth Swagger and Class- It'll Crush You November 27, 2011
Format:Audio CD
"The King of the Honky Tonks", Gary Stewart. Words can not do this live recording a faithful justice.

You have a true country music legend with an all-star band on hand this time, and they knocked the ball out of the park (and into the next zip code) with this effort. Gary Stewart's "Live at Billy Bob's" performance is a teardrop of perfection from the downbeat to finish. The steel guitar is very illustrious and detailed with very tasteful, often very subtle nuances. Yes, it's not the same as the studio recordings you are used to. You'll have to be open to something a little different with this record.

Gary was a man whose soul was pure, and his concern for others genuine. This fact shines through in this recording, through Gary's singing especially. While it's true that the tonal quality of Gary's voice and his ability to hit the high notes were both somewhat diminished by age, I find those aspects to be cosmetic and hollow, ultimately. What really counts is Gary's magical ability to use his voice to transmit what he's feeling to an audience and to make them feel it too. This is the true genius in Gary's work. The band takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride that is very intense. Not for the hearing/feeling impaired. The authenticity of the song subjects in themselves are humbling and often crippling to consider. Add to that the spot on and very sincere vocal delivery, and you have pure country gold, folks. This is what country music is all about. This record deserves to be heard in full without any distractions. It's sufficient enough to bring a tear to a glass eye.

4.0 out of 5 stars GARY'S THE MAN! April 23, 2003
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I've been a stone Gary Stewart fan for life; the man is Soulful
like no other, and he sadly shows up what passes for today's air-brushed country music. It's great to have a LIVE recording of him
but somehow it falls just a little short: somehow I still prefer the studio cuts for maximum power and intensity, but it's still worth having for sure. Let me add my voice to the chorus: PLEASE
let the powers that be re-release his first couple of albums!
Meanwhile,we are all damn lucky that the Man is still playing those dates in Texas and recording for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars honky tonk dracula October 31, 2012
Format:Audio CD
this album was panned when it first came out--don't really know why! i saw gary twice in his brief life and consider him the only person as sad as hank williams. that said, he was a brilliant performer when he was "on". watching gary cavort and rumble was like watching death 5 minutes before it actually happened. a real genius in his own unorthodox way. hope he is happy in his "afterlife."

Several years ago, a good friend of mine worked on this release and helped to shed some light on the issues being debated by reviewers here on Amazon. Also, I must add that I saw Gary perform about 8 months or so prior to when this show was recorded. On the night of this recording, I was at home with food poisoning.

As many of you are aware, this disc does not represent the complete performance from the night when this concert took place. The reason this disc is relatively short compared to other Billy Bob's Live releases is due to the fact that Gary Stewart made noticeable mistakes during the set. Although his band was tight as a virgin that night, Gary was constantly battling inner demons. Demons which many of us (including myself) have faced at one time or another.

The performance on this disc is rough and gritty, which was representative of his live shows and not out of line for a man who made some of the greatest outlaw country music. Contrary to other reviewers, Gary's voice doesn't sound bad for a guy who was nearly 60 years old at the time of this recording. The only justifiable negative comments would be centered around which songs were not included. Billy Bob's does have archives of older performances by Gary (in addition to many other artists), but the quality of those performances and Gary's state at those earlier times remains unknown.

Being Old School, I grew up regarding Webb Pierce as the honky tonk king. Maybe he still is, but anyone who appreciates this unique music will surely put Gary next to him. Read more
