Black Widow - 'Demons Of The Night Gather To See, Live' (Mystic) 4 1/2 stars,
By
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
Another rarity I never thought of having a chance to see getting a proper release. CD + DVD both features the same show - a 1970 TV German Beat Club show of UK progressive / doom rockers Black Widow performing their entire 'Sacrifice' album on stage. Reason I'm giving it a 4 1/2 rating rather than five is because the gig was (reportedly) filmed in black & white, however the editor of this DVD added a blue tint through out the seven song performance. Picture quality is very good, gets fuzzy now again but just for a few seconds. Sound quality is great. Tunes here I enjoyed the most were the awesome "Way To Power", "Come To The Sabbat" (stunning flute work), the King Crimson-like "Conjuration", "Attack Of The Demon" and the fifteen-minute "Sacrifice" where front man Kip Trevor romances, dances with, strips naked and puts a dagger into the sacrificial virgin {?}. CD is nice to put in your regular CD player, boom box, car stereo, etc. as duration is 56 minutes. So, you get an extra twelve minutes of music here that isn't on the original lp. Mostly different arrangements, extended solos, etc. Line-up: Kip Trevor-vocals, Jim Gannon-guitar & vocals, Geoff Griffith- bass, Zoot Taylor-keyboards, Clive Jones-flute & sax, Clive Box-drums and female dancer-Astaroth. An absolute must-have.

Black Widow Live!,
By
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
Anyone who likes Black Widow, this is a must have! Even if you have nothing else by them, this is a great place to start. The band is in fine form, Trevor's vocals as srong as ever, and this rocks a bit harder than the studio versions. This is a rare and historic recording, and probably our one and only chance to see and hear Black Widow live. They are a truely great and shamefully neglected band. This was filmed by the wonderful folks at the Beat Club, in Germany, and they did an amazing job. The camera work is great, and the sound quality better than most things done for TV in this time period. The infamous Sacrifice album is performed in its entirety, and the band put on quite a show, complete with a suple, nude beauty portraying Ashtoreth. Progressive rock fans, occult rock fans, gather to see Black Widow live! This is a real bargin. I spent $40.00 on mine. Had to have it as soon as it was released all the way from the UK. It was worth every penny. Now if only Coven will discover something like this in their archives...

Black Widow combo,
By
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
Poor Black Widow never got a fair chance really.Their label had no confidence in them and their road crew left them for Black Sabbath back in 1970.The magical powers of BW endured and 40 years later they are finally getting a modicum of respect from fans who weren't even born when these albums came out.The DVD is shot in a psychedelic blue sepia tone that adds to the allure and mystery of the set.The CD is wonderful,(worth it for Geoff Griffith's bass tone alone!!),and has some of the songs arranged a little differently,(Attack of the Demon!). The combo pack is a must have for any true Black Widow fan and even moreso for anyone who is interested in Occult rock and where it started,(along with COVEN).Come to the SABBAT!!!
