5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, February 5, 2007

Swing King (Cincinnati, OH USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live at the Blue Note (Audio CD)
What a truly incredible interpretive album from a young leader like Mayfield. The sextet itself features the following musicians: Mayfield (trumpet), Eric Reed (piano), Carlos Enriquez (bass), Delfeayo Marsalis (trombone), Wessell Anderson (sax), and Jaz Sawyer (drums). Recorded on September 7, 1998 at the Blue Note in New York, this set gets the ball rolling with Bobby Tippins' classic song "Moanin'". The musicians handle the standard with ease and finesse. Next Irvin introduces the second track to us, a Ray Noble song titled "Cherokee". Mayfield's trumpeting on this track is superb. Next we have an old Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh song titled "On The Sunny Side of the Street", which showcases some mighty nice key work by Eric Reed.

"West End Blues", the following track penned by Joe "King" Oliver, is an interesting title featuring some bluesy trumpeting. Track five, "Did You Call Her Today?" a track written by Ben Webster, showcases some excellent saxophone work by Wessell Anderson. Track six, "Don't You Know What Love Is?" by Gwen Guthrie, is a nice slow romantic outing. The last track, "Be Bop", by Dizzy Gillespie, shows the sextet pulling off a solid be-bop tune. All around this group is of a high quality and deserves several listens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for Jazz collectors, May 21, 2005
This review is from: Live at the Blue Note (Audio CD)
Brilliant, outstanding work. A must have for jazz colectors. You can hear that Mayfield has all the technical gifts of an icon trumpeter. Sound quality on this CD is very open and transparent.
