OOP ep DualDisc great music beautiful performer, March 15, 2005
This ep is made using DualDisc technology: CD on one side, DVD on the other. It is slightly thicker than a CD and may not play in all older CD players. Most DVD players wont have a problem with it. Unsure of DVD Region. It comes from Canada, so it's either R1 or R0. Limited Edition ep was dist. by Maple exclusively online/mail order. Maple normally distros thru Universal. Side 1: 2 songs from Failer & 1 AC/DC cover (Money Talks) live at Vancouver's Bowery Ballroom with her touring band of 2002 or so. Side 2: 2 music videos, but missing Hockey Skates! The music is well produced, unlike some live records. Her music is oft compared to Lucinda Williams; acoustic, folk, country, intimate, simple, and true. An amazing beautiful Canadian songwriter who was only 22 or so when this was recorded. The DVD side is also good. Missing 1 video but a good change from all the MTV crap out there. This CDVD is a great purchase which appeals to folk, country, and pop audiences alike. And this is a review coming from someone who plays goth, punk, metal, industrial stuff usually.

The live music is awesome; the videos aren't so great., January 11, 2004
This release uses a novelty technology called "one-disc" which allows a single disc to contain both CD and DVD information, on two separate sides. It's certainly a new and ecologically friendly way to have multiple formats on one release, though I wonder whether this will complicate playback problems in the long run.
Kathleen Edwards is one of my favourite new artists of the past year, with sure-handed songwriting and impeccable delivery. I was disappointed in the two videos, directed by Yael Staav. When will video directors stop being so lazy by shooting the musicians on beds and bedrooms with lots and lots of bright light but no dramatic, story or symbolic context? Staav couldn't be bothered to actually work on writing scripts for the videos, despite being provided with one in the lyrics to "Six O'Clock News". Instead, she just puts Edwards under flattering light and keeps having her sing to the camera. Edwards is an extremely attractive woman, but damn it, her music deserves better. It dismayed me to no end to see a brainy artist with smart songs stuck with dumb videos and a slacker of a video director.
The music is another deal. Edwards already had a crack band on the Failer album, but on the live tracks she is accompanied by the fantastic Colin Cripps, formerly of Crash Vegas. Cripps and Edwards are a match made in heaven. I do wish she'd done "Six O'Clock News" or "One More Song the Radio Won't Like", but her live singing is very good, with a wavery vibrato reminiscent of Sarah Harmer, and the sound quality is just beautiful, especially "Hockey Skates", where the expansive guitar parts sound monumental. And Edwards' cover of "Money Talks" shows both her sense of humour and her deftness with songcraft. The classic AC/DC fist-pumper is transformed by Edwards and her band into a sweet, wry yet groovy country rocker.
Just the three live tracks are worth the price. Get it.

Kathleen is the best!, May 27, 2008
I am a Kathleen Edwards fanatic, so anything she does is alright by me. The live music on this DualDisc is fabulous. (If you've never seen Kathleen live, by all means go see her!) The videos are nothing to write home about, but they are a nice bonus. One caveat, though: If you have a slot-loading CD player--either in your laptop, desktop, or automobile--do NOT attempt to play the music from this CD in your CD player. You might never get the disc out without a costly repair. I absolutely HATE the DualDisc format and am happy that it seems to have died a slow death. Because the discs are thicker than regular CDs or DVDs, they wreak havoc on slot-loading players. Just be warned.
