This two-disc set commemorates Whoopi Goldberg's return to Broadway 20 years after the 1985 show that revealed her. The
first CD is dedicated to the profanity-loving dopester Fontaine, a classic Goldberg character, who discourses on everything from finding Saddam to Spongebob Squarepants. Stay away if you have a problem with cussing. The second CD is basically split between Luraleen and a character identified only as "Handicapped Lady." Lurlaleen is a menopausal Southern belle who actually doesn't sound that different from Fontaine---she just swears less. A segment highlight, if you can call it that, is a lengthy soliloquy about the revolutionary aspect of sanitary products. "Handicapped Lady" sounds the least like the Goldberg we're familiar with, although her monologue highlights a certain sentimentality that's always lurked right below the comedian¹s abrasive surface. The appeal of
Back to Broadway: The 20th Anniversary really is for hardcore Goldberg fans; others may find themselves looking at their watch, waiting for jokes that never seem to materialize---comedy has changed a lot between 1985 and 2005, but Goldberg's style remains frozen in amber.
