This is a MUST !, December 31, 2003
This review is from: Live in Buffalo (Audio CD)
Made in UK in 2003, Serial# VPTMQ-005-CD, Playing Time 78:40
As much as I thought that the "Dragon Attack" CD had nothing going for it (unless you're a completist), this release MUST find its way into anyone's ASIA library that is somewhat serious about collecting this band...
Recorded in Buffalo, New York on May 3, 1982, the performance of the original line-up (Downes, Howe, Palmer, Wetton) has been captured here MAGNIFICENTLY; I personally think it's a top-notch quality, especially if you compare it to "Dragon Attack", "Live In Hyogo", "Quadra" and "Enso-Kai". Every instrument can be heard clearly, and the mix-down has just the right balance, including Wetton's vocals (at least, to my ears.)
There are no liner notes or pictures in this package, but what a concert!!!; the track listed as "Claps" is in fact an acoustic performance of maestro Howe containing "Clap" and "Ram"; and of course, the almost-12-minutes-long version of "Here Comes The Feeling" features Mr. Palmer's mind-boggling drums solo.
Unfortunately, the last track on disc 1 ("Only Time Will Tell") fades out about 3 seconds too soon. This concert could have fitted on a single disc (and hopefully bring the price down).
In my opinion, this CD is the best one I've heard from their first tour, and I've heard many. This one is not for completists only: it belongs in every collection of all ASIA afficionados!

Soundboard recording at last from original Asia lineup!, January 15, 2004
This review is from: Live in Buffalo (Audio CD)
I've been waiting for this for a long time: a soundboard recording from original Asia lineup. The first album is played with solos from Steve Howe, Geoffrey Downes and Carl Palmer. Also very interesting version of "midnight sun" which appeared on their second then unreleased album. The recording itself is very rough soundboard recording but it's very good quality. Negative points are: poor editing and lack of information on tray. Highly recommended! I'll hope there is more soundboard stuff coming from this line up.

Almost Great, May 4, 2004
This review is from: Live in Buffalo (Audio CD)
Ok, first The Bad:
The quality is OK. A little mastering, and the rumbly bass and high-end hiss could have easily been eliminated (I know this for a fact since I did it myself on my home studio). Wetton's voice is a little ragged, and the backing vocals are always off-key. The beginning of "Heat" is inexplicably lopped off. The packaging is chintzy, and the whole thing would have fit on one CD.
The Good:
WHEEEEEEEE!!! We finally have the original (and for most of us, the ONLY) line-up of Asia in a live soundboard recording. The musicianship is incredible -- you can hear most parts clearly, and Geoff and Steve's soloing (and Carl too) is stellar. The performance is exuberant most of the time.
Get this disk -- you'll love it.
