5.0 out of 5 stars Proof That Diana Ross Could Sing Very Well - Fantastic Album, September 25, 2007
By
Blog Shag "I believe in juicing" (San Bernardino County, California) - See all my reviews
Diana Ross' legacy has lasted so long because of the fact she didn't just stick to singing one type of music like many of the artists you hear today, which made her fit into several music categories (pop, rock and roll, soul, jazz) not just one. Also her music was just as wildly popular in the ghetto as it was in high societies. She crossed racial and cultural barriers galore and challenged the preconceived notions of what a black female singer was supposed to sound like. This in turn made her unique and only further showcased her beautiful and distinct high soprano vocal style. It also helped that she was given some great material while with The Supremes in the 1960's which turned out to be timeless sounding classics.

She may very well have been the first black female pop/rock music diva.
I dare anyone to tell me that Diana Ross couldn't sing. People that say that have more than just a few screws loose. It's like DUH, that is what she was known for; her distinctive and beautiful high piano soprano style of singing. and fabulous classy fashion sense. And if there are those that say that, they are certainly not talking about the Diana Ross of 1974, which this live recording depicts. In those days, it was impossible not to admire her vocal verve, lilt, agility, awesome interpretation of songs and incredible stylish, elegant fashion sense. Besides having a gorgeous voice she was a sight to behold.. stage presence galore.... This live album is no exception to this rule. It's wonderful. Wish I wasn't so young at the time, I definitely would have been in Las Vegas for this one.

I actually have the better and digitally remastered version of this CD. It was recently (2006/2007) re-released in Brazil and now it's even becoming rare there.

Ross is in very fine voice on this CD. Unlike her studio recordings, you can really hear the piercing raw energy of her beautiful voice on this record. She opens with one of Barbara Streisand's signature songs - "Don't Rain On My Parade" and kicks derriere on that song, gets applause galore, zips through a few of her hits from The Supremes era with a quick medley and then goes to big band and Broadway show tunes styled music for the rest of the album. It's fabulously done. Keep in mind this concert album was recorded just after she had finished her acting debut in the phenomenally successful movie, "Lady Sings The Blues" so it was no surprise that her concerts were filled with this type of big band music, and not just pop music. Also, in 1973/74 when this album was made, big band music wasn't really in style at that time either, but when she sang it you kind of forgot the obsolete factor of the music. Who cares what kind of music it is, as long as it's done well?

And for those that think Diana Ross can't belt out a song, just listen as you can tell she has quite a time belting it out on such songs as Barbara Streisand's hit, "Don't Rain On My Parade", "Corner of the Sky" and "Lady Is A Tramp" . Every song on this album is a tour-de-force and most of it is a refreshing shift from the much of the pop styled music that made her famous.

Another thing that is worthy of note here is Diana Ross' speaking voice, which you hear a great deal of on this recording. Her speaking voice was just as beautiful, crisp, clear and articulate as her singing voice. It's a shame she never did narration or voice-overs in those days.

This album sells for $100.00 or more when it's totally out of print, so if you see it for $24.99 or $49.99.. GET IT! - `cause you won't see it for awhile when all the genuine copies are gone, not at that inexpensive price. I had been looking for this album for 6 years or so, and I finally have it, and I'm very happy that I do.

It's a shame that the record companies can only find a market for this compact disc in LIMITED markets. The one I bought is a Brazilian import. Any Diana Ross fan would love to have this album, and it would fly off the shelves if it was available in the United States. It's wonderful

5.0 out of 5 stars Caesar rolls out the deserving red carpet for Miss Ross!, January 10, 2008

This review is from: Live at Caesar's Palace (Audio CD)
One of the most famous and pioneering first sopranos of the rock and roll music genre, Ross knocks 'em "dead" again with her impeccable singing voice, stage presence, style, poise, beauty during this performance at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, NV, U.S.A. (1974) For those of you wondering, yeah, this was recorded back when she still had a high pitched nasal voice.

She's LIVE and in very fine voice on this album and sings show tunes and blues favorites of hers and others. She belts as only she can on "Don't Rain on My Parade" and "My Corner of the Sky" from the Broadway show "Pippin". Her energy, dynamics and interpretation are astounding and mesmerizing. The way she performed "Corner of the Sky" brought tears to my eyes, 'cause it was so beautiful. She moves you on this album.

There isn't a lot of rock and roll style on this album with the exception of a quick medley showcasing of her hits she made famous as lead singer fo the 60's girl group Diana Ross and the Supremes, it seems to be a concert styled to satisfy a cabaret audience with a big band backing her and music to fit big band, jazz and show tune stylings, but that doesn't make the album any less enjoyable whatsoever. In fact, it may make it more enjoyable for some as it proves she was an incredible singer. There is also some stand up comedy designed to work with the flow and theme of the concert delivered with her equally musical speaking voice. It's too bad she never did voice-overs.

Worthy of note: This compact disc contains a much better version of "I Love You Porgy" than her "Blue" cd.

This compact audio disc is a rare gem and out of print. I was able to obtain a Brazilian pressing in 2007 for a reasonable price and let me tell you it was worth every penny. The original compact disc I have of this recording is actually a digitally remastered version. The sound quality is fantastic and the art work is bolder and better (It doesn't have the ugly grey border you see in the representation here)
