5.0 out of 5 stars Legal Schmegal...who cares??
...P>I'm not going to go into a bunch of bull about this or that. This is quality music, from his awesome acoustic to his soulful lyrics. If you appreciate quality, and by the way if that rings your bell...you do, you will appreciate Monte. Just trust me on that (and look at his ratings on all of his other CDs here on Amazon.com...that says something)

I can genuinly...

1.0 out of 5 stars NO!
I would agree with the others -- this is a crappy bootleg. The music is incredible but, as one of the others said, the mix is "1-dimensional."

DO NOT BUY! Get something that Monte approved of! He's beyond this.

I can genuinly say this is my favorite CD.

I am not sure what all the legal stuff is about, but it doesn't affect my ability to listen to good music and you shouldn't ...either.

4.0 out of 5 stars Okay recording of one of the best live performers, January 21, 2004
This review is from: Live at the Caravan of Dreams (Audio CD)
The recording and production of this cd fails to capture the complexity of Monte and his band. Three guys sound like 6, as carefully woven rhythms grab ahold of you until Monte shakes you up with his guitar work... when you see them live, or listent to a studio album. For some reason, the bass seems to get lost on this recording, and the guitar solos fail to cut through. Still a good cd, but could have been one of the 10 best in my collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monte Live - with his consent!, February 3, 2003

O.K., O.K., so this is a quasi-bootleg - Monte did consent to the recording and the mix that TMG turned out is pretty good (I personally like it without all the compression usually afforded Monte CDs). Monte is in great form, his tunes are well done, his band is excellent, and I'll await the "official" cut which I will also buy - but I'm not giving this one back!

4.0 out of 5 stars Virtuosity is a little boring, December 30, 2004
This review is from: Live at the Caravan of Dreams (Audio CD)
I don't doubt that Monte Montgomery is the best guitar player in the whole state of Texas, and I don't doubt that he's something to see in person, but all in all I found this live CD a bit repetitive and lacking in variety. Too many of the songs sound the same: virtuoso guitar licks and heavy drums.

I listened closely to "Romeo and Juliet" which is one of my favorite songs. Yes, Monte picks out the melody beautifully now and then, but most of this 13 minute song is played like an exercise in complex chords and scales. Montgomery sings pretty well, and his back up players are good, but there aren't any songs on this two-CD concert that stay in the mind. Monte Montgomery merits 4 stars for being a helluva guitar player.

5.0 out of 5 stars ALMOST experienced!, December 21, 2007
This review is from: Live at the Caravan of Dreams (Audio CD)
The mailman just rang the doorbell...i was expecting the phone company...and i was so surprised to receive this CD as a gift that i almost broke the cover trying to open it!!! [Yo record companies---
what's with that annoying steel-like tape y'all be putting on top?]

i heard John Hall doing "Sarah Smile" on the Howard Stern show about a month ago and immediately googled the chord changes...completely forgot how good that song sounded, THEN googled up some videos for the song because i wasn't gonna get a Hall & Oates CD for what might prove to be a passing fancy, and it was THEN i discovered Monte Montgomery.

Figures he's from Austin...the last Hendrix hailed from those parts, but unlike SRV Monte takes the guitar in a whole new direction, much like Jimi did before him. IF anyone had told me you could get these kind of sounds out of an acoustic electric i'd tell them they were lying...but then again, look at the sounds that Roy Buchanan got out of a Tele!

The only one i can compare him to is Jean-Luc Ponty, the jazz violin virtuoso who took THAT instrument to a whole new level by amplifying it, and i'd like to think that if Jimi was still around he'd go to the woodshed after seeing Monte play.

Why MM isn't the Eddie VanHalen of acoustic-electric guitar now is just a matter of exposure, talent-wise he belongs in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame NOW just on chops alone...but the Cleveland institute is more interested in inducting DISCO divas so they can build up attendance rather than real talent...now when is someone gonna book this boy in NYC so i can call the funkateers out?

5.0 out of 5 stars Politics Aren't as Important as the Music, December 9, 2002
By
KaTman "KaTman" (Carrollton, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Live at the Caravan of Dreams (Audio CD)
So the Texas Music Group put out this CD set despite Monte objections. Too bad, but CD's are about music, not politics and this double CD set captures a full night of awesome music by an incredible performer.

I was at this Ft. Worth show myself, and the performance was excellent, as is this recording done by Dallas Music Labs on 37 channels in their mobile unit.

Mr. Montgomery is hands down one of the most brilliant gifted guitarists on the planet. And on top of that, he is also a charming charismatic performer with strong vocals and excellent songwriting.

This CD is a MUST OWN!
