OMG I do not know where to start. I bought this for my 6 year old son, and I ended up enjoying this more than him. It is a really cool experience. I definitely recommend this product. It is easy to handle, simple instructions and I can't describe the feeling of seeing them change to caterpillars and then to butterflies. My son wanted to keep them, I had to explain him that their life span is really short and that they belong outside of a cage. After I bought this, my sister in law bought one for herself and one of my friends got one for her little ones. Everyone says the same, it is awesome to watch them become butterflies.
I am planning on buying it again.

We received SIX healthy caterpillars a day before the earliest predicted arrival. Each one turned into an active Painted Lady butterfly, and we just released them into our backyard today. My 5-year old daughter and even her neighborhood friends really enjoyed seeing the life cycles of the butterfly. When you order caterpillars from the more popular brand (that sells the habitats in stores), all you get is the cup of caterpillars. This kit by Nature Gift Store came with caterpillars, misting bottle, a container with packets of sugar to feed the butterflies, and a cute coloring page showing the life cycles of butterflies along with care instructions - Awesome!

It took our caterpillars around 5 weeks to form chrysalis', but we've enjoyed watching them through every step. Shedding they're skin and growing like crazy. I think I enjoy watching them almost as much as my daughter. We're currently waiting for our butterflies to emerge, can't wait to see them!

2 out of 5 survived. Got two kits for my two boys, which worked out. Same survival rate each kit. Be aware the "birthing" process can be messy and gross (red fluid everywhere and thise that don't make it can be half formed and scary looking to some). Boys enjoyed the process but did not ask to repeat it. Praying mantis egg was more prolific and less graphic.

1 butterfly never turned into a chrysalis. we waited over 2 weeks after the other caterpillars had changed. finally I set the caterpillar free, because I didn't want to deal with the heart ach from my 5yr old if the caterpillar died. The others turned into butterflies like planned. I would recommend this.

I live in Florida and was super nervous about ordering a live creature to be mailed to me. Thankfully, they survived the trip and extra day in our mail box because I forgot to check tracking.

These were for my 6 year old who assured us she was an expert butterfly mom because her kindergarten class had just raised and released their own set of flighty creature. Turns out, it is true that even a 6 year old can raise butterflies successfully! I was surprised by how little work they required.

An unexpected lesson we learned was how butterflies go about making more butterflies. The flirty flying around their mesh home resulted in a few hook ups that required explanation. No big deal though because the natural world is the easiest way to explain how reproduction works without making it scary or mysterious.

Folks - These are your tiny, black, almost hairless, most boring of tree grubs. They don't grow to be anything like a Wooly Bear Caterpillar (note many species of Wooly Bear are poisonous so you wouldn't pick those up with bare hands) but my point is, the directions say just leave them in the cup and let them chrysalis before transferring them to your Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden. Well that's pretty boring. Not to mention that it isn't the natural way caterpillars chrysalis (hanging by the inside of a tiny cup lid). But here's what we did and it worked great. We let the caterpillars out inside the butterfly garden, and fed them the food off of a small flat piece of plastic (lid cut-up). They loved it and crawled all over inside which was fun to observe. The food tends to get dried out when it isn't sealed into the cup though. So just feed half of the food nice and moist and put the other half away. When the one half gets dried out, reconstitute it with a little water and put it away covered with plastic. Feed the moist that is ready to the caterpillars. This switch out will need to be done daily in the morning. It takes about ten days before the caterpillars chrysalis, and when they come out you don't feed them that stuff any more, its just sugar water and the kit supplies what you need to feed your butterflies. However, our butterflies didn't like that sugar water set up. We ended up giving them apple juice from a small plastic lid and they went for that. Hope this is helpful. They start as teeny grubs when you get them, but the wait is worth it. We ended up with 4 out of 6 making it to butterflies.
