Editorial Reviews

Like their West Coast Contemporaries Sly and the Family Stone, the Chambers Brothers shattered racial and musical divides to forge an incendiary fusion of funk, gospel, blues, and psychedelia which reached its apex with the perennial 1968 song ""Time Has Come Today"". Featured here in a nine-minute version. This exciting concert performance features many of their other hits including ""All Strung Out"" and their unique versions of several soul and blues standards. Full specialist magazine and radio mailout.

3.0 out of 5 stars If only..., November 25, 2007
This review is from: Live (Audio CD)
It hurts to give this album only three stars because the quality of the performance is so good. Unfortunately, the quality of the recording is equally as bad. In my opinion, The Brothers' versions of Wilson Pickett's, You're So Fine, and James Brown's, Please, Please, Please are as good as covers get. They went straight to heart of these songs, pulled out the best elements and infused them with the unique emotive quality of their vocals.

The other tracks are excellent as well and there is an interesting version of Time Has Come Today, with awkward, breathy, laughing and the "cookoo" call showing up at the end instead of the beginning.

The trouble lies in the quality of the source recording. The instruments are audible but so low that they are repeatedly drowned out by the vocals, giving the album an a cappella feel. If only the mobile recording truck had been parked outside.

3.0 out of 5 stars performance date?, February 4, 2008

I've only heard the samples here, so no added opinion on the performance or recording quality. Just thought it was pertinant to add that Jeff Carp is listed as the harmonica player. Carp's career was beteeen '68 and his death january '73, w/ not much in '72. Thus it's reasonable to date this between '68 and '71.
