(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Live at Checkerboard Lounge (Audio CD)
This is the man. This is one of the last true blue blues guitarists left on the planet. This CD is a recording of a live performance of Buddy Guy at his best.

He introduces the album by saying that it may not be the best album but that it would be the first album that he "ever got on down". He calls it "Alley Music". He doesn't waste any time playing "art rock". His small back up band (that includes his brother Phil Guy - an excellent guitarist) lays down a funky blues beat while he punishes the strings with licks that will weaken the knees.

During a brief mellow moment in the music, the listener can hear an obviously drunk woman in the background making editorial comments. Buddy says to her, "Take it easy momma." It's the atmosphere of a small, smoke filled blues bar. You can almost smell the ribs, catfish and gumbo cooking. This is our culture.

Get this CD, close your eyes and take a trip with Buddy to downtown Chicago or to the Louisiana bayou.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal, August 23, 2000

This review is from: Live at Checkerboard Lounge (Audio CD)
I have never seen a better show than a Buddy Guy show. He is the most amazing showmen around. On this CD he plays Live in Chicago, and the fire is there for sure. And its just he and his regular band, no saxophones, trumpets. As with most of his repertoire from this period, he dont play 'songs'. Basically he wails on the guitar and make up verses from different blues standards.
