Editorial Reviews

This comprises two 'live' club performances by the Cal Tjader Quintet, recorded at the Club Macumba in either September or October 1956. It comprises a fascinating line-up of the quintet, including the great Luis Kant on congas, along with an unnamed bongo player.

This previously unreleased live recording captures Cal Tjader and his quintet playing live at The Club Macumba on a couple of different dates in 1956. According to the liner notes, this was taped by a radio broadcaster named Ken Ackerman along with other jazz acts of that era. His original reel-to-reel tapes were rediscovered in 2006 and remastered for commercial release for the first time ever. The liner notes for this Cal Tjader CD are surprisingly complete, and they go into great detail about the personnel at these gigs and how they fit into Cal's lineup over the course of time. But it seems that these recordings were done more as an historical record than with any intent of releasing them commercially. The result is that this set it best suited to fans of Cal Tjader who already have some of his primary releases; this would not be ideal for someone just getting into Cal's music.

As for the music itself, this is by far the loosest, most informal live CD by Cal Tjader I've ever heard. Unlike his other live CD's, the producers of this album did not edit out the filler between songs, so you can hear the warmups and casual banter and that make you feel like you're actually in the room. The band itself must not have been together very long and apparently someone was just filling in, as there are several occasions where you can hear Cal calling out key changes and even how the head of the tune was supposed to go. At one point someone in the crowd asks for "Kelly's Blues" and you can hear Cal saying "We haven't rehearsed it yet," followed by Cal instructing the band to play a straight blues with a little riff he apparently made up to appease the audience. They manage to keep it together and there are some really nice solos by Cal and Vince Guaraldi.

There is so little that can be added to the kudos and praises for Cal Tjader. This recording is of particular interest to the real aficionados because it features some fine musicians that were the group "in between" Cal's two greatest groups.

Overall the fidelity of this session is pretty good, considering Cal was a perfectionist. He probably didn't
know or care it was being recorded. The timbales cascara is a little overbearing and so is Cal's cow bell
work. The vibes are a little weak on volume and balance. Many of the tunes sound like they are prototypes
for future studio recordings, like Birdland and Philadelphia Mambo.

I've been listening to Cal for over 50 years, so I had to buy this for my collection. I enjoy the energy and
looseness of the recording ,unfortunately the verbal banter is not directly miked and sounds muted.
Vince didn't yet develope his funky montuno/ Cubano sound, but he has good latin flair ( sounds like
Noro Morales )

Buy it if you are a devoted fan, you'll hear some new vamps / riffs never previously recorded.

If you like his music and also his latin rhythms you will like this. He started out as a drummer and was self taught with the vibraharp. I also discovered he played with Dave Brubeck very early in their careers.

Its nice to hear Cal and his group live, when he was begining to explode on the latin jazz scene !
There wil only be one Cal Tjader so it's great to enjoy these gems !
